But Marty needed a sidekick--a partner in crime and the"Watson" to her "Sherlock." We immediately thought of one of the most famous female characters in the Sherlock stories, Irene Adler. In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original Sherlock Holmes novels, Irene is referred to as the only woman who could ever match wits with Holmes himself and is sometimes thought of as the love of his life. So, while we knew we wanted to modernize the original Victorian opera singer, Irene, we still wanted to keep some of the elements that made her a legend. She had to be beautiful, smart, and have an adventurous spirit. In fact, if you ask Marty, she might even blame Irene for staring the whole Sherlock Holmes legend in the first place...
