I love Sherlock (well, until that ending to S3E3). And I love seeing and hearing the real actors in this game. The problem is that this isn't much of a game even though I wish it were and really want to love it!
First, you get started and have no idea what to do. Walk around and click on money? There isn't a clear reason why at first. Then you realize you can spend money to move to locations faster. But not only do you spend money on it but then you play a mini game. The cab game is one of those unblock your car games where you move other cars in such a way as to release your car so it can drive to the right. The subway game is one where you place tracks to get from the left to the right (like many of the pipe puzzles). Not exactly Sherlock level brain teasers.
When you get places, like Sherlock's flat, you simply touch everywhere on the screen. There isn't a clear reason to click on things. No hints at what you are looking for. After you click for a bit you'll find clues. Random, useless clues that don't play a part in solving the crime. If you haven't found all of them after a second they will start to highlight with a soft circle around them. Again, not Sherlock level stuff here. Very basic.
And at the payoff, you are told to look for the answer that will solve everything. You get brief instructions but nothing that tells you what you are looking for. In Case 1, I simply clicked everywhere and it told me "Close, but not quite right" or something then I realized what it was looking for. I felt like I was solving the game not solving the case. Case 1 does make sense in the end but everything we do leading up to the resolution doesn't add to the solving simply the waiting. Case 2 is even worse as you have no idea what the game is trying to get you to do in your "mind palace". After figuring out what it wants (and the answer was so simple I serieoulsy never expected it to be right and went for far more clever answers which were wrong) it's a weak payoff. I'm just not interested in playing parking and pipe games then clicking all over the place. I want real clues and the ability to solve real crimes.
In the end I deleted the game. No matter how much I love Sherlock I dont want to play this game. It's clicking everywhere and trial and error and not really clear or clever. The reward isn't worth the time.
I've been wanting this ever since it came out for Iphone/ipad, and couldn't wait to grab the android version.
So I'm incredibly disappointed that the app doesn't WORK. I have tried repeatedly to solve even the first case but when I click on clues it crashes. EVERY TIME. I love Sherlock and everything sherlock and want to play the game desperately, but until it's fixed, it's non-playable on my android phone. I'd love to update and give it 5 stars, so please please fix it.... for now, it's stuck at a 1 star, because I can't play. :(
I'm now on the third case and I haven't gotten any instructions. I'm aimlessly walking around the map gathering money and wasting time. Is that what I'm supposed to be doing? Sherlock popped up in the beginning but it wouldn't let me listen to him..so I went to cases and clicked on the case I was at and.....nothing. Forced stopped the app and.....nothing. I just want to play and not waste the time that seems so Damon important in the game.
I think I would love this app if I could actually get it to load! Here's what happened: I opened the app. There was wonderful Mr. Cumberbatch talking to me as Sherlock. A popup said this is better viewed with earphones. I paused the app while I went to find my earphones. When I plugged in said earphones, a bar said loading and that there was two minutes to go. Why was that when I had just been watching it, presumably "downloaded?" Twenty minutes later, I shut the app down; went back to it several times trying to load and it never did. I'll probably delete it. I gave it twp stars cause I like the picture of Benedict Cumberbatch on my Kindle.
I got this through the offers on my kindle fire. The offer was for the app and the first 6 cases free. The app page only says two cases free, but I decided to try it anyway. I am a huge fan of the series, but not of this game.
The first two cases were okay, less puzzles and searching than I would expect for one chapter of a games (minigames only for travel and final clues). It just falls short of what I expect as a "game" - and while the cameos are cool, it feels less like I'm playing and more like a slightly interactive show, with lots of stress on the slightly.
Plus, as others have mentioned only the first two cases are playable for free. The store to buy more doesn't seem to work with the kindle fire, so I couldn't even see how much other cases cost. It took me less than 15 minutes to play through the free cases. That's more indicative of a demo or free trial than a game.
If there were more interaction, less just getting the clues from characters Sherlock and John, much more game playing and clue gathering, I would be more likely to buy future cases. As it is, there's not enough playing, and definitely not enough to convince me to keep this app.
From the moment that Sherlock starts talking to you as a potential member of the homeless network, I was hooked. Funny and smart and intriguing, it was one of the best episodic games I have ever played. The production values are excellent. The only parts that frustrated me were the unscrambling of the video puzzles - when there were only 2 known numbers, it was extremely difficult. Playing through the second time, I mapped out a strategy and that worked, but the first time I nearly gave up. All in all, though, a Great Game.
I am very disappointed with the glitches in this game. The game itself is fun but the loads are very slow and I keep getting a message - "The network has stopped working". I hope the developers will read this and make repairs. They need to issue a patch to everyone who downloaded the game. I have paid for extra cases and cannot get the game to stay open long enough to solve them.
