Editorial Reviews

Original soundtrack to the BBC TV series. If David Arnold and Michael Price did not exist, it would be necessary for man to invent them. Their contribution to Sherlock is immeasurable. Thrilling, cheeky, sinister, playful and simply world-class: the music's not bad either! Silva Screen Records.

If, like me, you fell in love with the Moriarty theme that dominates the chase scenes at the end of The episode "The Reichenbach Fall" don't get your hopes up. That track does NOT exist on this soundtrack album. There is a slight hint of the theme on at the begining of track "Deduction and Deception" but it never amounts to much.

This is such a shame since there is a lot of duplication on the album. To miss out this theme that dramatically ratchets up the tension and excitment of on one the best Sherlock episodes yet is a crime.

All the greatness that the first season of Sherlock had to offer returns once again in the second series. David Arnold & Michael Price expand on their modern Sherlock Holmes world. This time around the duo expand the soundscape a bit to make it have more substance and it tones down on the quirky side. The score represented on the album is structured quite nicely; as the music progresses we delve into deeper darker bits of score.

The first series had some great music, but I found there to be a lacking uniqueness to it all. It tried to play the quirkiness that Hans Zimmer nailed on the head in the film incarnation, and it felt like it forgot that it was a modern adaptation. This time around Arnold and Price move away from that soundscape of the first season and do indeed bring the series a modern and more developed feel. The music is richer with great motifs, and the music is to be taken seriously. There is a great emotional weight to the score, especially in the second half when things really get going. Arnold and Price aren't afraid to use electronics, which is a great thing. The electronics in some of the tracks definitely give the score the modern feel it needs. All in all the music is moving in such a great direction while building off of everything they did in the first season.

Sherlock is a terrific effort from David Arnold and Michael Price. The music finds a good balance of classic orchestrations and synth textures. The way the music builds and crafts drama is impressive, and it always keeps the listener engrossed. Series 2 is a much stronger effort than Series 1 as it seems the music has finally found its footing. Recurring motifs make the score that much stronger in what's an incredibly enjoyable experience.

If getting the soundtracks just to listen to certain familiar tunes, then the first series may be preferable. However, if you are listening to the albums from start to finish, the second (this one) is much smoother in transitions and more engaging and dynamic in its sentiment.

Fair but not great. I love the show and think it's one of the best shows every made. And I really like the music but after purchasing and listening to this season 2 CD it's mostly low energy background music. There are a few good tracks but this is not what I would consider a 5 star or even a 4 star item. I'll still try season 1 and season 3 and hope for better. Being a big fan of Murray Gold (Dr Who) and Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica) I think this is a bit of a disappointment.

I LOVE this cd! The music in the first season was really good, and with this second season grew even better! In season two, the stakes are higher, the games deadlier ad the bond between Sherlock and Watson stronger than ever! This season is also the introduction of Irene Adler made more interesting by the haunting tones of "her song". Includes the eerie and spine tingling tunes of the Hound. Last, but certainly not least, there is also the heartbreaking melody to Moriarty's manipulations and Sherlock's downfall. Just go ahead and buy this, really.

The second album from the second season of Sherlock opens with the solo violin theme "composed" by Sherlock Holmes, supposedly in honor of Irene Adler. The rest of the album has the incidental music that is such an integral part of the hit series from the BBC. It's amazing, but this music really becomes a sort of character--you are always aware of it, and I know I look forward to the recurrence of certain themes during the episodes. I can hardly remember a series where the music plays more of a part.

This album seems a bit more dramatic and less quirky than the first album but is no less enjoyable--in fact, it may be a bit more so.

Ever since I watched the show, other than the amazing characters and plots, the music is what held my attention as well. This soundtrack is as amazing as the previous soundtrack. Anyone who is a Sherlock fan would love it!
