Our cat is like our kid (especially to my wife) so we had to make sure to get the right carrier. We shopped and compared several airline-approved carriers and decided on the Sherpa based on reviews. Since you can only take one carry-on bag and one personal item, we appreciated the zipped pockets and storage areas of the Sherpa. We put in wetnaps, cat toys, food and snacks and a water dispenser (I filled once I got past security).
You need to take the cat out when going through security, so I asked to do that in the private room you'd otherwise never want to see. The TSA were very nice and understanding. And the process went without the cat escaping into the airport.
There were a couple of times when our cat was obviously unhappy during the flight, but overall he did fantastic. He slept mostly and had plenty of room in the Sherpa. We put an absorbent pad under the included fleece liner but fortunately the cat was able to hold it until he got outside and into his cat suite at the pet hotel.
Two thumbs up (and two paws) from my cat and I for the Sherpa.
Kitty weighs about 10 pounds, and has plenty of room to move around. In the days leading up to the trip, I set the carrier in the family room with one of the sides open. Kitty thought this was quite the treat, and would hang out & sleep in the carrier.
I was a little concerned using this carrier since it's a bit taller than Southwest's regulations of 8.5" tall. However, at least at my airport they didn't seem to mind. They didn't even bother to measure, just took the fees, verified I had my vet paperwork if needed & stuck the pet luggage tag on the handle and we were good to go. I had to take the cat out of the carrier during the Security Checkpoint. I brought one of her favorite flannel pillowcases to wrap around her, she was calm & well behaved. What I liked about the bag during the security process is that the zippers on the top flap were easy to maneuver with one hand. It easily fit under the seat in front of me. Kitty didn't seem to mind the trip at all. She's really mellow & laid back, spent the trip just looking around & napping.
Since she's remaining with my husband in our new state, I would be bringing the carrier back with me in the suitcase. by unzipping the two end doors, I was able to flatten the carrier & it fit well in my suitcase. It's back in the family room, set up next to the other Sherpa carrier I recently purchased, so that our other two cats can get ready for their excursion. Once we're all moved, we plan to hang onto the carriers for vet appointments.
I'm very pleased with Sherpa's carriers, and would buy them again. I'd looked previously at other brands, but the Sherpa is reasonably priced, well made, & fits our needs.
At home, these carriers are left out and they use them as comfy little cat caves at naptime so when it comes time to have to take them someplace, they aren't stressed and settle in calmly. These bags also make it easy to carry both cats and my suitcase AND open doors. Its the little things in life that make me happy.
I recommend this carrier to everyone I know who needs to transport a pet often or far distances.
