Emily Rockford is a nobody. She escaped her abusive husband, moved across the country, and is doing her best to be invisible. But a girl's gotta eat, so she takes a sketchy job answering the phone, taking messages, making no conversation with callers and asking no questions. The more she learns about her new job, both inadvertently and with a little snooping, the more she becomes embroiled in danger.
Holy wow, this book stole my breath! It reads really quickly, and saying it captured my attention doesn’t begin to do it justice. It seemed like time stood still as it held me in its hypnotic snare. Emily has certainly found herself in a big, dangerous, intriguing mess, seemingly running from one desperate situation to another. While this storyline is wrapped up nicely, there's more to come in this series with Emily, and I need it now!! Run to the 1-Click and start reading this phenomenal, gripping, suspenseful story today!
She’s Got the Guns is the first book in a series, so don’t expect any sort of definite conclusion. That said, the ending is satisfying while also leaving this reader wanting the next book to release soon. Well under 200 pages, it is easily read in one sitting. The pace is fast but steady, with nothing feeling rushed and no dragging.
The best parts of the story is the dialogue, especially from Emily. It's punchy and clever, making this character immensely memorable.
"“No. No $% way.” She shook a finger at him. “I did not risk my life running from the psycho-frying-pan just to jump into the hit-man-fire.”"
"“Your point, Mr. Murder?” she growled. He narrowed his cold eyes. “Speak to me like that again, and I’ll rip out your tongue and mail it to your parents.” “Good luck with that. I don’t have any parents, and my tongue only gets me in trouble. Especially with men like you.” She paused, noting the room for interpretation. “I meant that in the talking context.” “Do you have a death wish?” He folded his thick arms across his chest. “Yes, but it’s not intentional. I’ll shut up.”
"“I have another task for you—an errand I need you to run tonight.” “Sounds terrible. What is it?” she asked."
Poor Emily is dragged into a crazy turf war, and it's memorizing. She is one tough chick! As I zipped through this charming book, I felt winded in a good way, as more of Emily 's past and her new employer were revealed. The whole thing reminded me of Ocean's 11, in the way all the messy pieces fit together at the end. Technically, the whole story is a spoiler, so I have to be super careful with this review. It was a glorious caper staring an unconventional female hero that demanded my attention until the very satisfying ending. What an incredible debut.
From the moment I started reading it I was hooked and didn’t stop until I was finished!
Fascinating story and look inside an industry I’ve always been curious about, Pest Control.
Full of laughs and surprises to keep you guessing, She’s Got The Guns is a great book to debut with!!!
“And look at me Ubering to a gunfight. What could possibly go wrong with this plan?”
Our protagonist Emily tripped and fell into the deep end with this one. The good news? She’s a real spitfire and she’s not gonna roll over and play dead, thanks in part to a new attitude born from being on the run from her abusive ex. I happened across this book by accident and I’m so glad I did. It’s very engaging and I love Emily. She’s resourceful, sharp, and very witty.
As of now, there’s no romance, only flirtation. However, based on the interaction between Emily and Charge, that might change in the future. I know the author’s name is a pseudonym for a romance author, but I’m not sure which one. If another of these stories comes out next month, I think I’ll have my answer. All that aside, I hope to not have to wait for another book for very long. I also hope that the next in the series maintains the thrill and intrigue of Emily’s adventure without going completely down the romance path.
This writer’s style reminds me of Denise Grover Swank; so if you like her novels, you should like this, too. It’s only 131 pages, so it’s a fun ride that comes shooting out of a cannon and never loses speed.
