"This sequel to SHADE (2010) will not disappoint fans of paranormal romance with its blend of action, starcrossed lovers, and entanglements, both dangerous and sexy." --Booklist, May 2011
About the Author
Jeri Smith-Ready has been writing fiction since the night she had her first double espresso. A steady stream of caffeine has resulted in twelve published novels for teens and adults, including RT Reviewers Choice-winning fantasy EYES OF CROW; as well as the PRISM award-winning WICKED GAME and SHADE. Her most recent release is the YA contemporary novel THIS SIDE OF SALVATION, which Booklist called a "smart, unpredictable, and well-rounded tale" in its starred review.
Jeri lives in the rolling hills of Maryland with her husband and two cats, who often play tag-team "sit in the author's lap and keep her from writing." (The cats, that is, not the husband. Though actually...) When not writing, she's either out running or on Twitter.

It is difficult to write a review for a second book in a series without mentioning an event or two that occurred in the first book. There may be some spoilers from book one in this review, so please continue at your own risk. I've tried very hard to be as spoiler-free as possible.
SHIFT starts off where SHADE ended. Literally. The transition between the books is seamless and there is no awkward retelling of book one events in the first few chapters as can be the case in some series.
The thing that excites me most about this book is the character development of the two main male characters in the series. Logan is almost unrecognizable from who he was before his death in SHADE. To simply say he matures is really doing an injustice to his growth and the events that are a catalyst to his maturity.
And Zachary. Where to begin? Well, there are some heartbreaking moments with Zachary in this installment. But here's the thing: They needed to happen. A boy can only be so patient with a girl that is being pretty darn wishy-washy in this whole love triangle business. Aura kinda gets her just deserts. In addition to Aura's indecisive heart, Zachary has to consider the ramifications their relationship will have on the WHOLE WORLD! That's a tough call, kids. Even with the heartbreak felt in SHIFT, Zachary is very, very close to becoming my favorite fictional boyfriend of all time.
Aura is still Aura. I've always really liked her and I think her maturity level is enviable. Not sure how she's able to practice such self control with a naked Zachary, but like I said, her maturity level is enviable. I'm pretty sure I don't have that level of maturity at double her age. ;)
Many secrets were learned in SHIFT and I feel like the love triangle has been resolved after finishing this book. Which makes me wonder what SHINE is going to bring us. (Surely many chapters will be dedicated to a castle getaway.) There is a hint of a new love triangle forming for Aura so maybe that plot line will be more developed? And I am anxious to learn more about the mysterious Shine event, too. Or....maybe it will be a 500 page love story that accidentally turns into an adult book? Either way, I'm anxiously awaiting Jeri Smith-Ready's next masterpiece.
Aura shows a great deal of growth over the course of Shift. She begins to come to terms with the fact that Logan is dead and that things cannot go back to the way they were when he was alive. She stops dwelling so heavily on the past and begins looking toward the future. However, this is Aura, so of course things are never easy. Just as she begins to choose the future she wants, things get in the way. The reader will really feel for Aura; seriously my heart hurt a lot during this book.
Zach is back in full force in this book, and boy oh boy do I adore him. He is not perfect, but I like him more because of that. While I may love him, he still made some choices in this book that made me want to smack him upside the head. Then we have Logan, who I like but I just don’t adore him like I adore Zach. Logan is just too clingy and whiny for me. I also think he is a bit self-centered, but then again that is just him. I love that both boys in this book are genuinely likable, because it makes the love triangle much more interesting. I also love that neither one is perfect, they both made mistakes, and there were moments where they both made me shake my head. It is more believable this way, rather than there being the one “perfect” guy up against the other guy who seems to just be in the way.
Aside from the lovable boys, the plot in Shift is great. It is fast paced and will keep you guessing. More and more about Aura’s past is coming to light and of course the DMP are beginning to get way too interested. It is becoming clear that Aura being the first is not coincidence and that there are some things that come along with that. These are the kind of things that need to be kept secret from the DMP. Then we have Zach who is a walking BlackBox and well things are just not simple at all. Then there is also the mystery of her father and well that one was a whopper.
Shift is the kind of book that can break your heart one minute, but have you smiling the next. It manages to combine the paranormal with humor, real life situations, and heartbreaking moments. You will become engrossed in the story and the world around you will cease to exist. I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning in my quest to finish this book and I do not regret it.
All in all, Shift is a great story and a great second book in the Shade series. This series is very original and captivating and something that you need to pick up soon.
But there is plot and plot drives this one very quickly. Always at their backs, Aura, Logan and Zachary have the DMP. And Aura and Zachary are afraid they will find out their secret. Logan knows and ghosts can't lie. What if he tells them? And something weird happens with Logan while he's with Aura. Something impossible. We get a lot of information about Aura's past in this sequel and the plot, especially the last half, is full of chases, surprise clues to Aura's past, and some very sexy love scenes. Had me blushing! That last half goes by so fast feels like you've only been reading an hour or so. Maybe that was all I was reading. I don't know I'm just glad there's a third book!
The characters were just as full and entertaining as before. I was yelling at some and pulling my hair out at the antics of others. And "as the plot thickened" as they say, I swear I was jumping up and down encouraging my two favorite characters.
If Shade was good, Shift was even better. I've been told that the second book is harder to write, but you couldn't tell it by Shift. It's a terrific sequel and surpasses Shade. Just waiting for Shine....
