As a senior ME student, I think Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design may be a good reference book, but find it is a poor text. Most topics are covered quickly and equations presented with little or no emphasis on any engineering derivation. This will frustrate engineers who enjoy knowing why the equations work. Also many of the answers found in the back of the book are simply incorrect. This inhibits the value of the problems found at the end of each chapter. The book covers a myriad of engineering topics which makes it fine to pull off the shelf to find the correct equation to use. However as a text, it lacks the engineering and mathematical depth to help one understand why the equations presented are true and why they work.

I purchased this book for my ENGM400: Mechanical Engineering Design class. I gained a lot from that class, but that was LARGELY due to a very experienced professor with excellent presentation abilities. This textbook is filled with useful information, but without a professional to explain how to use many of the concepts presented, it is nearly useless. Until you have been taught the purpose of various tables and charts, and guided through the methods of analyzing many of the problems contained inside, this book will only confuse you.

The book does provide many excellent examples, but unfortunately some of these are severely lacking in explanation, leaving you to puzzle over WHY the authors chose to solve problems the way they did; other problem types are completely missing a corresponding example and are just as confusing.

Obviously, if this textbook is a requirement for your class, reading this review won't persuade you not to buy it. To be honest, I would actually recommend buying it rather than borrowing or leasing, because once you have been instructed in its use it has a ton of helpful information and I have been using it for reference at my place of employment. However, don't expect to pick it up as something to read for knowledge without a course to accompany it.

My first experience with Shigley's Mechanical Engineering was in college when the book was required for one of my classes. This was back around the 1972 time frame. I kept that book and used it, along with several other colleagues, to the point where the book was falling to pieces. At this point I decided to brake down and buy the latest version which has much more information. If you do any kind of stress analysis work, Shigley's is a must have book.

I bought this textbook for an upper-level undergraduate mechanical engineering class and found the concise nature of the book to be helpful for summarizing a large number of topics. I did occasionally have to refer to other textbooks for a more detailed description of topics which I didn't understand, but the text and appendices make this my go to guide when I am doing design work or homework.
