Shim stock is made from thin rolls or sheets of material and used to create shims, which are placed between objects for a variety of uses, including added support, improved leveling, increased insulation, tighter seals, or better spacing. They also can be used to fill gaps between machine parts that are prone to wear. Copper and brass shim stock provides a nonmagnetic, corrosion-resistant surface that is softer than steel or other ferrous alloys. Steel shim stock provides significantly more strength than brass, and stainless steel shim stock provides this strength in addition to good resistance to corrosion. Providing a strong weight-to-strength ratio, aluminum shim stock is a good conductor of electricity and also provides a surface that is corrosion resistant and nonmagnetic. Plastic shim stock is best suited for low-strength applications where chemical and environmental corrosion protection is required. Rolls will typically have the following dimensions specified: thickness, width, and length. Thickness tolerance should also be noted.
