The 12000 holds about 550 yards (maybe more) of 30 pound test fireline. This capacity is needed when I catch a monster shark or game fish - they love to run!
I use my reel in the surf at Seabrook Island, South Carolina (A private island that offers great surf fishing -- you can rent an ocean front villa for a great price!) It gets splashed with the salt water, and keeps on going! I always use the baitrunner feature.
I did own a Van Staal for a few months, I traded up for the Thunnus, and saved a bunch of money in the process. I also own a Thunnus 6000, and I notice that the 12000 gives me longer cast. It also seems to be a bit more smoother on the retrieve.
Towards the end of the season, my 6000 was completely summerged in the sandy surf water and the gears started to grind. For the low price of $24, Shimano serviced it. It is like brand new! With a strong company that is ready to service this excellent reel, I see this being an easy 5 star rating.
Bottom line - a great reel that is backed by a great company. The service is wonderful and reasonably priced. The drag and strength of this reel will enable you to bring in the monsters of the sea!

This is simply the best surf reel on the market. (I did own a Van Staal for a few months, and traded it in for the Thunnus.)
With this reel, I landed a 4 foot shark and a 6 foot manta ray on the beach. The drag held togther. The reel gets plenty of splashes from the surf, it holds up well.

My one complaint - I need a lot more line. These large fish will take the hook and run. Even with the very small diameter of the fireline, the 6000 is a bit small. I now plan to use the 6000 as my backup reel, and I purchased a Thunnus 12000 for my primary. It holds about 550 yards of 30 pound fireline!
Bottom line - a great reel that is backed by a great company. The service is wonderful and reasonably priced. The drag and strength of this reel will enable you to bring in the monsters of the sea! (Just be careful to understand your line requirements)

Totally exceeds all expectations.
The 6000 Baitrunner is also excellent which I also have and convinced me to spend the extra for this all ball-bearing light-weight model.
If you like live-bait fishing this is the best of all reels.
