Product Description

The Shimpo DT-205LR-S12 portable contact/noncontact tachometer has a 12-inch wheel, measures rotational speed, linear speed, and total length, and has a laser beam for noncontact measurements. This portable contact/noncontact tachometer has a 12-inch wheel and is used for measuring the speed of motors, conveyor belts, and other moving and rotational systems. It measures rotational speed, linear speed, and total length for flexibility of use. Its optical sensor is a laser beam that works at a distance from 1 inch to 20 feet for user safety. The five-digit LCD screen presents test results and the unit of measurement. It stores up to 13 readings, including the maximum, minimum, and last test result values for ease of data recall. A die-cast aluminum body provides durability in harsh environments, and the device can be tripod-mounted and locked to take continuous measurements. The tachometer conforms to NIST standards for compliance with regulations, and the CE mark indicates compliance with applicable EU directives. It comes with a 12-inch wheel, a contact adapter, two cone adapters, a funnel adapter, a 3.5-inch extension shaft, a carrying case, reflective tape, and an NIST certificate. This tachometer is suitable for measuring rotational speed and other measurements in mechanical or industrial engineering environments.

Tachometers measure the rate of rotation or surface speed of motors, conveyor belts, and other moving systems. Contact tachometers take measurements through direct contact with the moving surface, and can measure both rpm and surface speed. Typically, contact tachometers come with a range of attachments that can be used to measure speed on different kinds of rotary systems, which may include tips used for measuring shafts with a central hole or flat end surfaces, and rotary wheels for measuring conveyor belts. Noncontact tachometers take measurements from a distance using a beam of infrared light, and provide highly accurate measurements. Contact tachometers are an excellent choice for dirty and dusty environments; noncontact tachometers only calculate rpm but are considered safer because they do not require the operator to be in close contact with the moving surface. Contact/noncontact tachometers, also known as dual, or combination tachometers, can be used to take contact and noncontact measurements. Some tachometers can also take other types of measurements, such as count or frequency, while others can output data to a computer for analysis. Tachometers are used in applications such as automobile maintenance, mechanical engineering, and maintenance of industrial equipment.

Verified Purchase
I was hesitant at the price of this unit as it is expensive. However I decided that on most tools you get what you pay for so I purchased this unit as I needed an accurate measurement for my marine Diesel engines. After reading the directions and following, I initially used a (recommended) "small piece" of supplied reflective tape to the crank dampener. After much frustration of getting very consistent (still jumpy but got the same readings consistently) but very inaccurate rpm's, I thought that the tape was potentially too small so I applied about a 1 inch piece on it. Same exact results. Then I closed the engine hatch making it darker thinking possibly too much ambient light. Only then could I get accurate results but very inconsistent! Most of the time it read the same as before. Mid 1600 rpm. I have digital tach's and they read 820's. (I was only trying to test the unit with a known rpm). I could only get very the true rpm for only a few seconds then it would jump back to inaccurate high readings. Then I figured I would try the contact wheel. Wow was this inaccurate. I switched the setting over to contact rpm and tried it. It then read the rpms were 16000 plus! Yes thousands!! So be warned about this unit. I should have been concerned when I could not find a single review on it!
