Editorial Reviews

At a rough guesstimate Bernie Marsden s name appears on a hundred albums maybe more. In addition to a long-running solo career the Buckinghamshire-born guitarist has been a recording musician since the early 1970s via membership of such groups as Whitesnake, UFO, Wild Turkey, Babe Ruth, Paice Ashton & Lord, Cozy Powell s Hammer, Alaska, M3 and many more. Though there s a tendency to pigeonhole him as a blues-rock guitarist, each of Marsden s acts had its own individual flavor.

Although Marsden was wary of flooding the credits with too many special guests, Shine does feature some extremely well-known names, from Joe Bonamassa to Whitesnake singer David Coverdale and the Deep Purple duo of Ian Paice (drums) and Don Airey (keyboards). Jimmy Copley of Jeff Beck fame behind the kit and Mark Feltham of Nine Below Zero also supplies some breathtaking harmonica playing. I can t help it, I ve got a lot of mates and quite a few of them are guitar players , Bernie laughs.

Mr Marsden has knocked out a brill album.
1. Linin Track:- starts with the crackle one hears when the needle drops onto the old LP ( Long Player not Les Paul ) record. Having had all my LPs stolen years back, I had forgotten that, fun times.
2. Wedding Day:- Another thump along rocking tune.
3. Walk Away:- To me an 80s style rock anthem, nothing wrong with that. Great guitar licks ( if only I could play like that ), good lyrics, fab singing.
4. Kinda Wish She Would:- A fast thumping, slightly harder rock song. This one has some rocking piano belting out a tune. I can see the chorus getting a lot of audience participation on this track.
5. Ladyfriend:- A slower rock tune, this shows Bernie is not a one trick pony. More Bluesey with a harmonica wailing throughout.
6. Trouble:- Coverdale doing the yodeling on this track, he certainly still has what it takes to make any song sound great. Bernie comes in with his guitar pulling the song together. I am guessing the pair had a lot of fun making this track.
7. Who Do We Think We Are:- Probably my favourite although all tracks are top notch. I slower song, great lyrics. Although one can hear Bernies guitar wailing a solo, it is not overdone. Lasting 5 minutes 25 seconds, it could have gone twice as long for me.
8. Bad Blood:- Cherry Lee Mewis ( new to me ) is one of the ladies who can really belt out a tune. This girl reminds me of Bianca Kinane who has done some great vocals on John Verity`s latest album.
9. Shine :- This another tune going on full chat. Joe Bonamassa sounds good, he can guest for me anytime.
10. Dragonfly:- I could waltz to this one, smooth Blues perhaps. Bernies lead guitar effortlessly grooves along to the cool vocals.
11.

this is a very good cd by this guitar legend that has been on the scene now for almost 45 years, bernie is most remembered for his late 70s/early 80s years with whitesnake but bernie played with many other artists back in the 70s and into the 80s after whitesnake and has been playing all along into the 90s and now the 00s as a solo artist and sometimes a fill in, bernie is very highly respected as a rock musician and has been since the early 70s now, as for this solo record this is very good but i was hoping bernie kept the sound on this more in an old school fashion even though the guitar playing smokes on here with bernies classic blues elements and in this case modern production sounding hard rock sound, the whitesnake cover of the classic 1978 hit trouble is very very well done but i liked bernies first 2 solo albums back in 1979 and 1980 most i feel they are more of what the real bernie is all about as some modern stuff has been done in the production department with This disc and i dont feel it serves the music justice HOWEVER the guitar playing on here is classic marsden and his solos are as great as ever, if you have been following bernie since the 90s then im sure you will give this 5 stars, ive been a marsden fan since 1979 so my ears go for the more older analog production sound i suppose but im glad i bought this, if bernie wants to go into the vaults i would love him to release (along with phil mogg of coarse) a live show bernie did in germany back in 1973 with ufo before michael schenker joined...Read more ›

The song "Trouble" is a really good remake with Coverdale on vocals. Dragonfly is also a sweet tune. "Burst the Bubble" had some catchier tunes though. "Kind of Wish She Would" was actually on that album also. Bernie and Coverdale should do a full out blues album, but that will probably never happen because Whitesnake makes Ritz Carlton bucks touring with the metal outfit. If metal goes into seclusion again, then this is the stuff.
