Apparently, Hamee is a Japan-based, authorized reseller of the Shine Itazura product, and sure enough, they also charge one of the higher prices on Amazon ($20) compared to the other vendors that sell for half that and ship from China. I have nothing against Chinese-made products, but I'd assume that if the product ships from Japan, it most likely is the genuine one.
I sent an email to Hamee after placing the order through Amazon and asked them to ensure they'd ship me the Panda just as it's pictured, and that it would say "Ni hao". They assured me that they are.
A few days after the order was placed, I received the item in USPS packaging. The panda coin box was inside a clear, sealed retail box. You can see the panda (peek through the brown box) through the clear box as pictured here on Amazon.
There was no instruction manual included, and no AA batteries. I unscrewed the battery compartment, inserted 2 AA batteries, and switched it On. I proceeded to place a coin onto the bamboo-adorned, white placeholder at the top of the coin box. Nothing happened. I slightly pushed it to add some pressure, and suddenly, "Ni hao", and the panda came out to steal the coin. The box then closed and the panda said, "Bye bye". My wife, her mom, and my cousin all immediately fell in love. Indeed, it is a very cute product.
In regards to some reviewers and commenters being fine purchasing knock-offs of the Shine Itazura for the lower prices -- their argument is that this is a toy and that the cheaper price is fine for them. However, I have read a lot of reviews where they received either the wrong product, one that broke quickly, or one that made the wrong sounds, such as "Meow" (cat sound). Since when does a Panda make meow sounds? Regardless, I agree that as a toy, the cost probably should not matter much, and it definitely would not matter to young children. As long as a panda steals the coin, that's all the entertainment the kids need.
For those of you who want a genuine product to give to your older friends and family, I do suggest spending a bit more and get the real thing. That way, you'll be assured that you'll receive the right product.
Bottom line: We have no problems buying a knock-off (if that's what it is) when the original retailer won't sell outside his country. If we could have bought directly from them, we would have done that. In the meantime, we're happy with our maybe real, maybe not Panda bank that works like a charm. I may even buy another one.
