The adventure begins when Khe flees simmering political tensions in her corenta (city) and sets out in search of the titular shining sea in the company of a small and engaging ensemble of characters, including Marnka and a male character, seldom encountered in the earlier books. Khe's interactions and potential romance with the latter character provide a fascinating subplot. Khe discovers new powers along with the way, which she will need to confront an epic threat to planet Ahsenthe. The story delivers some nice surprises as it builds to an exciting and satisfying conclusion. I highly recommend this series to readers who love imaginative fiction in the vein of Gene Wolfe, Ursula Le Guin, and James Triptee Jr.
I am a longtime fan of the Khe series as it is a unique sci-fantasy type of novel that drew me in due to the uniqueness of the novel. This book is faithful to the history of the series and adds another layer of complexity to the story.
The characters (4/5*). The characters, both new and old, continue to grow in depth and complexity throughout this series and in this book. I appreciate the complexity of some of the characters and the added depth given to them in this book demonstrating that they are not one-dimensional and can have complex motivations.
The world (5/5*). I'm a huge fan of stories that are driven by the world of the characters. Stories in which the world and environment do not simply fade into the background of the story or have zero impact, but instead are woven into the story itself. And this series delivers that in spades.
The plot (3/5*). The plot started very strong, but lost me slightly in the end. Even after finishing the story, I'm not quite certain what happened in the end. I have my suspicions (and perhaps this will be explained in a future book), but there was a fairly major "what on earth...errr...what on Ahsenthe?" moment towards the end.
Total: 12/15* = 4* review. If you are interested in a series that is a quick read featuring an interesting world with reasonably complex characters, this series is worth it.
