By: Lani Lynn Vale
This is the first book in the Kilgore Fire series. Since it’s set in Kilgore, it obviously has some overlap with some of LLV’s other series. I usually like overlap and seeing some of my older favorite characters, but also there were just too many characters to remember them all & what happened during their stories. LLV does do a little explanation with each character, but it felt stilted and almost detracted from the story. It seemed like there were a certain amount that LLV was trying to inject into this story as well.
I also didn’t feel the connection between Tai & Mia. They had a very short meeting in which they were not only instantly attracted to one another, but would seemingly start falling in love with one another right away. Then they are there for one another followed by a period of separation, quickly followed by “I have fallen for him/her, this distance ends now” followed by a full on relationship. There was no real flow of relationship development or even character development. Furthermore, there was never a reason or motivation given for the main drama surrounding the fire department & the culprits.
I will continue reading LLV’s books, as I do like the characters and her sense of humor. The 2nd book in the Kilgore Fire series appears to be a drama of craziness. I’m not sure how many books are planned for this series, but I would assume by the characters introduced in this first book, that there would 4 or 5 more.
Mia is a nurse and a single mother to a very sick boy. When Mia finds out that Tia could be a potential match for her son she goes to KFD looking Tia. She tells him exactly what she wants and he offers to help and he does big time.
However, things are going wrong for Tia and Mia right now and it seems as though it's one step forward and 3 steps back. But Mia is determined to show Tia what she sees in him. Will she break down his walls or will be shut her down?
More so that any of her other books, this one physically hurt me to read. I can’t really even touch on the issue without giving anything away, but you’ve been warned; have tissues handy. Just know that each time Mia cried, each time she screamed, each time she broke down, I was right there with her. A few chapters in and I could barely breathe. But even though it was painful, it was oh so delicious and worth it in the end. I loved how Tai was there for her every step of the way, even when he barely knew her. There was this connection they shared that just couldn’t be explained, yet couldn’t be denied either. It was raw, true, and utterly beautiful. My only qualm about the story is that even though there was so many mentions in his and Jack’s book about their deceased sister Catori, it was never really explained a whole lot. And since it was told that Tai blamed himself for her death, I would have expected more of a backstory for her. Other than that though, this book was complete perfection. We were given a small insight to the next couple in the series and I cannot wait to dive into that story when it comes out in a couple of months! I just can’t get enough of this author!
The story was packed with heartache, humour, action and suspense. There was heat, sexual attraction in spades and some totally smokin' hot down and dirty scenes!! We got both POV which is a fave of mine - I really enjoy reading things from our hero's side as well as our leading lady!
I fell for both the lead characters. Taima was a really great guy who blamed himself for the loss of his sister even though it wasn't his fault - my heart hurt for him. I loved how Mia got under his skin - without really trying - and how good she was for him.
Mia, gods, my heart broke for what she went through!! How she got through things showed her strength and character and I wanted things to work out right for her. At times I could understand her thinking and reticence to certain things but I just kept hoping she'd see things as her, much deserved, second chance at happiness.
I loved getting to know a little about the 'family' that we were introduced to in Mia & Tai's story - both blood and friends/colleagues. I haven't read the Freebirds series but after meeing Tai's brother Jack and other characters in this book I'm definitely gonna be going back and checking them out!
LLV pulled me in with this story and I can't wait to read more in the Kilgore Fire series.
I give Shock Advised 5 red hot *
