Recorded late last year at Skywalker Sound in Lucas Valley, CA, Satriani assembled the dynamic trio of world-class musicians who had recently been part of his global tour; renowned keyboardist and guitarist Mike Keneally, a veteran of several Satch outings and recordings; along with drumming whiz Marco Minnemann and bass extraordinaire Bryan Beller. "I couldn't have asked for a better band to help bring these songs to life," says Satriani.
Recently, during the final performance of his two-year Unstoppable Momentum tour, Satriani had an epiphany; he found himself, "playing the guitar with my teeth an awful lot. I thought, 'Why are you doing this?' It's as if something else, or somebody else, was driving me to do it." Satriani seized upon this moment of self-realization as the springboard and creative center for his alter ego "Shockwave Supernova," the outlandish and extroverted 'performance side' of the normally shy and reserved guitar virtuoso. With this new persona as partner, Satriani launched his wildly ambitious 15th solo album, Shockwave Supernova.

Now I've pretty much loved everything the man has produced ever since a friend gave me FLYING IN A BLUE DREAM because said friend didn't "get it"....well I certainly did and that has led to many a year looking out for anything from this remarkable guitarist who is always pushing the envelope.
So I finally got around to buying this album and had noticed that it was drawing some pretty mixed comments, which may have been why I was a little slow out of the blocks with my purchase and, while overall, I do like the album, it's almost a game of two halves in that tracks that open the proceedings; Shockwave Supernova, Lost In A Memory, Crazy Joey and In My Pocket are all full on, loud and brash, exactly what you want and expect from the man, but thereafter, the pace drops off and frankly becomes a little hit and miss which, I noticed more especially while listening to it in the car on a lengthy journey, because at times, I was beginning to get a little bored and just could not resist flicking through tracks to get back to those meaty tracks once more!
Since this time, I have listened to it again in the car and more seriously on my home system and still I do find my attention wandering, even though this is, without doubt a fine, fine album.
So, if you're a big fan of JS, then this won't really disappoint....but if you're new to JS's music, then I would sincerely suggest that you start at FLYING IN A BLUE DREAM and maybe work yourself up to SHOCKWAVE SUPERNOVA.
Joe Satriani has an incredible sense for melody, and although some might criticize him for not pushing the genre bit further, he doesn't need to, he single-handedly created this genre, he has nothing to prove to anyone. The reason why I always look forward to his new album is because I know I will get impeccable musicianship, great melodies and music that will just make me feel good. It will no longer be extremely innovative, but it will be consistently good. This album is no exception.
Shockwave Supernova brings a mixture of slower and faster tracks, with some of the faster ones particularly memorable. Vinnie Colaiuta and Marco Minnemann on drums bring different flavour to the rhythm section and on this album it's really quite refreshing. Mike Keneally is unfortunately and again somewhat lost on this release - similarly to Momentum.
Listening to this album again and again just confirmed that Joe Satriani is one of the greatest composers in modern rock music. Also, there might be guitarists out there that can play faster, wilder, ... but there are very few that can create that incredible tone that Joe can produce.
It's got a varied feel track to track, but an over-all ease of access that means it won't be just guitar players and 'musos' getting in to it.
The guitar playing is (of course) sublime: concise but with no lack of feel or groove.
Production is immaculate, and, surprised to find, has an almost 'live' feel to it - not too clinical or stifling.
All the musicians on this album get to show their chops, and none dominates or comes across as gratuitous: it's a very tight album, with everyone serving the tracks.
I heard that in an interview, Joe mentioned the album was based around the concept of an alter-ego, the 'Shockwave Supernova' character... haven't had a real chance to explore it from that aspect yet, but I can definitely feel that the songs vary enough to be telling a story in some kind of order.
I hope this reaches a wider audience than just existing fans and curious guitarists - it deserves it. But then I say that about all Joe's albums!
Shockwave Supernova is his strongest release(IMHO) since Crystal Planet, there's some real brilliant changes in mood throughout the album, from its explosive opening, to dark middle section, then finishing with a reflective optimistic mellowness. Satch is on top form here.
The rhythm section on this accompanying Joe deserve special credit, each musician seems to be bringing something to the table, and gives a live band sound, similar to the dynamics that were present on "The Extremist" album. Brian Beller and Marco Minneman bring a looser more groovy backline to the compositions, and Mike Keneally's keyboards add some real atmosphere. I can't wait to hear some of these tracks live in June!
Shockwave Supernova is also well mixed and has good production, I highly recommended it.
Kudos Mr Satriani
