She is some what of a free spirit, thinks outside the box, and appears to be a lot of fun. He is instantly attracted and so the story takes off. They eventually fall in love with each other in a very short period of time but each has their own agenda and she especially seems to have her own best interest at heart and the heck with anyone else.
He makes the ultimate sacrifice, selling his island home, his yacht, various other holdings to get the million dollars needed to buy her "dream". Then realizing what she really wants, she GIVES the "dream" to the employees. I thought that was not generous, I thought it was selfish to take his money to give them something. Just give it away? I didn't like that part of the story at all. It seems as though he did all the GIVING, she was doing all the TAKING. Not a good start!! But, maybe I took it all to seriously. It was a fun, clean, entertaining read and I would recommend it.
Alex's grandparents, who have cared for him ever since his parents died in a plane crash, are pushing him to marry and have an heir before they die. He can see his grandfather becoming more fragile, and it worries him. He wants to grant their wish, especially since he'd promised his father he'd always take care of them. Against what he would have done otherwise, he shows up for the all-female dinner party. Spunky Charlie surprises him, he feels sparks whenever she's near, and she seems to feel them too. But he knows Charlie's stepmother will drive a hard bargain before he can have Charlie over the stepsisters. He just doesn't realize what far-reaching effects that bargain might have.
This was a light but interesting twist to Cinderella. It was such a fast read, I read it in one evening. It contained a few mild curse words, but no detailed sex scenes. I had to reread a couple of paragraphs, like the scene with the deck of cards, to understand exactly what was happening. The ending fell into place all too easily, and I think a little more would have made it better, but I reminded myself this is a fairy tale, so things can just fall together. I would read more by Laurie LeClair.
Alex is nice, caring man.
The chemistry is good between these two.
The story was okay. It seems to skip around a bit. It is a fun story.
I didn't get the sense that they really love each other. It seems a bit plastic.
The store plays the biggest part in the book and that is why it felt plastic. I know more about the store than I do about the main characters.
Both characters are driven by needs related to their families: Charlie wants to save her dead father’s department store, and Alex needs a wife and heir for his grandparents. The fact that they marry for convenience but then actually do come to love each other is sigh worthy… and in this modern tale, there are some sex scenes (fairly tame by today’s standards but certainly not part of the original Cinderella story). In the end they both make a realization about why they are driven, and a conscious decision to change. So in that regard, it is satisfying.
This was a very light read, each character pretty much what you expect, no real surprises. Everybody loves Charlie, Alex isn’t the playboy he’s been made out to be, the stepmother is a monster… then hey, one twist: turns out the stepsisters got a bad deal and are actually nice.
