You don't lose your situational awareness because your ears remain uncovered, you aren't sticking potentially filthy things into your ears, the design means you are less likely to lose them or have them fall out while you are exercising, they are much more compact than a set of over-the-ear headphones, they don't interfere with glasses, they are sweat and rainproof, etc. It is not hard to come up with a lot of scenarios where these are really the ideal headphone design.
But the one issue people kept complaining about in the reviews I read before buying these was sound quality. Some people said these headphones are really only good enough for audiobooks, others said they happily listen to music on them regularly without issue. Which is it?
I ran these things through my very demanding "speaker stress test" playlist and here are my results: The mids are generally ok, reasonably crisp. The highs are also reasonably well defined. Nothing that made me swoon with delight, but it was all perfectly serviceable for going on a run. Honestly, I assumed they would sound tinny and awful throughout the entire range, so I was pleasantly surprised at how well they handled vocals, guitar, strings, piano, horns etc.
But lots of music also has bass notes, and this is where the sound signature just kind of falls apart. If you are already familiar with how the bass rolls off too early on a cheap stereo, this is very much like that. Except that the bass roll off point is at an even higher frequency than you expect. I don't know how low these can go, but basically they have almost no bass response, and what little they have is muddy and generally quite poor.
Now that I understand what these can do and what they can't, it's pretty easy to understand why the sound quality reviews are all over the map. Basically, people have varying musical tastes and affinity for bass. If you are listening almost exclusively to hip-hop these are going to seem essentially unusable. If you listen to a violin concerto you will be fairly happy. Rock songs will have the vocals and guitar, but only the top half the drums rendered correctly.
Importantly, they also can't get terribly loud without vibrating against the side of your head in a weird, annoying way. I could generally find a comfortable volume where this wasn't an issue, but you will not be drowning out any ambient noise with these, particularly since your ears remain uncovered. So you really can't use these in any sort of loud environment without earplugs And if you are putting in ear plugs, you might as well use in-ear headphones instead. Walking around on a normal, urban street with these is generally fine, but anything louder than that and you may have some issues with these.
I did listen to an audiobook on these and thought they did a great job, and they were reasonably comfortable to wear for well over an hour. So probably their ideal use is listening to a podcast or audiobook while walking in a quiet park, or anywhere where you must maintain situational awareness.
I think that means these are fine for what they are, and if you need the considerable advantages they have, you live with the trade offs. Yes, it is possible to listen to music on them, and at least some music actually sounds reasonably decent on them, particularly if you are in a quiet place. But if you don't need the various advantages they have, then get yourself some regular, full-range headphones that will provide a much better bass response than these.
I am certainly not going to hang up my $300 planar magnetic headphones in favor of these when listening at home. But for listening to an audiobook while walking the dog, commuting and riding my bike, they will be fine.
Here are some pros and cons I've noted so far:
Pros-
- i can wear these and my hearing aid at the same time. (Over the ear headphones give me feedback and I'm not a fan of in-ear headphones.) They haven't caused eachother any sound issues in my experience. Be aware that the wires can tangle a bit, though, lest you accidentally launch your hearing aid across the room.
- These stay on very well. I work a highly mobile job and I haven't had these headphones come close to falling off or moving.
- You can hear your environment and your music at the same time. (However, one can drown out the other in certain situations and vice versa.)
- Depending on your hearing loss, you might be able to hear in stereo, which I have to say is really, really nice.
- The buttons are really easy to use, very useful for me because I can't touch my phone while working.
-The battery life! I haven't had them die on me yet.
Cons-
- In order to conduct the sound, the headphones do vibrate. I found that it's only noticeable at high volume. It can vibrate my hearing aid a bit, and though it tickles, it doesn't bother me. If you're sensitive to that sort of thing though, take note.
- I'm not very picky about audio. An audiophile would probably take note of the quieter bass, though. I imagine it's difficult for the smaller earpiece to handle.
- There is audio bleed. It's not horrendous, but it is probably a little more than your average pair of headphones. I'm able to keep my volume around 3/4 without anyone being bothered.
- These are active headphones, so laying down with them takes some finagling.
I'd also like to note:
- I really like the magnetic charger! It's very convenient.
- These do not come with a case, so if you want that you'll have to buy it separately.
Overall, I'm really happy with these! The cause of my hearing loss is unknown, so I was worried they wouldn't help at all, but they do. (I still keep my right ear at a higher volume in accessibility though.) Especially as someone with an active job, I really enjoy listening with these.

Aside from the positive, I unfortunately have a few thoughts about things that I found somewhat annoying about this set of headphones. Firstly, the sound quality is just about acceptable. They are no match for my entry level Sennheiser in-ear headphones so I have to carry both, depending on whether I need to play music or make calls. In particular, the bass response is poor, but this could be just down to my incorrect assumption that they would thump against my bones and produce deeper bass than they actually do.
As for performance in traffic or noisy surroundings, they are barely usable. I suppose in-ear phones have an advantage in that they block out ambient noise with the buds. This is a personal thing as it can equally be argued that these are specifically designed to allow open ear usage. I just find the trade-off too much.
The next annoyance is the loud beep that is produced every time the control buttons are pressed. When listening at low volume, the beep is quite jarring. I also got a rather startling vibration when I received an incoming call, but I’m not sure whether this was a one-off.
The last but most annoying feature of the headphones is the design of the bit of “titanium” that connects the two sides. I totally understand all the challenges the designers had to overcome to arrive at a product that stays in place through active use. I also appreciate the difficulty in trying to make a product that fits every size and shape of head; wigs, afros, bald, take your pick. Lastly, I realise that with controls on both sides of the head there had to be a robust wiring solution, and that doesn’t lend itself to an adjustable band. So, with all that in mind, I still think the shape of the band is totally impractical for anything other than for use when out and about. I already tried and there’s no way you are going to be able to use these on a train, plane or lying on your bed, unless on your side. You might just be able to get away with it if your height is such that the band goes into the gap between the backrest and headrest! I am sure there must be a way to overcome the weird jutting out from behind the head, which while functional is a big no for me.
In summary, I feel like this is a good product that will certainly serve well the sporty types or those who find in/over-ear headphones unsuitable, but falls short as a replacement for conventional headsets of the same price bracket. I haven’t yet tested the battery life as I simply can’t see myself having these on all day.
The size is 9cm when not in use so should fit most head sizes.
You can check the battery level whilst wearing, by pressing the on/off button once.

If you've tried cheaper versions of these the difference in sound quality is astounding. I use these on a road bike and you are able comfortably to hear music without intense vibration or turning the volume up high, while being able to hear road and surrounding noise too. For me the lyrics are clear, and the base crisp. Bluetooth connection is reliable and does not drop out (another flaw in cheaper types).
The slim style fits well with the helmet and is comfortable.
I have seen complaints about small buttons. I do not see this as a problem; the single multi function button is on the left ear, and volume buttons on the right. I can operate these with gloves on easily. (Again try cheaper versions, not good)
I'm also going deaf in my right ear, sadly, and now, occasionally, use a hearing aid. These headphones are completely compatible. I'll write a separate review about my right ear!
I'd highly recommend these, a good investment so far after several months use.
