In 1972, the town of DeClare, Oklahoma, was consumed by the terrifying murder of Gaylene Harjo and the disappearance of her baby, Nicky Jack. When the child's pajama bottoms were found on the banks of Willow Creek, everyone feared Nicky Jack was dead, although his body was never found.
Nearly thirty years later, Nicky Jack mysteriously returns to DeClare. His sudden reappearance will stun the people of DeClare and stir up long-buried emotions and memories. But what Nicky Jack discovers among the people who remember the night he vanished is far more than he, or anyone, bargains for. Piece by piece, what emerges is a story of dashed hopes, desperate love, and a shocking act with repercussions that will cry out for justice...and redemption.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A man's desperate search for his identity drives this riveting offering from the author of best-sellers Where the Heart Is (1995) and The Honk and Holler Opening Soon (1998). No one in sleepy DeClare, Oklahoma, has forgotten the 1972 murder of pretty Cherokee Gaylene Harjo and the abduction of her infant son, Nicky Jack. Hard-nosed deputy sheriff Oliver "O Boy" Daniels pinned the blame on local preacher Joe Dawson, but few in town believed the kindly Joe was capable of such an act. Powerful emotions resurface 30 years later, when Nicky Jack, adopted and raised by a rich couple in Beverly Hills, mysteriously reappears, determined to learn about his mother and the circumstances surrounding her death. Veteran short-story writer Letts peppers her prose with a cast of quirky characters, including a quartet of nosy, domino-playing senior citizens and a perky pool-hall owner who bakes peanut-butter pies. Readers of Sue Miller and Wally Lamb are sure to embrace this memorable tale of love, loss, humanity, and hope. Allison Block

It had an interesting story line and good characters, however the author threw in an unbelievable "love story". Those characters just didn't seem real and mainly forced. Other that that a good read

This is the best book I have ever read! I was absorbed into the story right from the beginning and could NOT put the book down! I fell in love with the characters, and the story is the perfect mix of suspense, mystery, drama, love story, and comedy. I LOVED IT! Thoroughly developed, quirky characters. I can picture all of it in my mind as if I were there. I did not want the book to end, though I was desperate to solve the mystery! This book will appeal to many different kinds of people, and is my #1 favorite book.

Billie Letts never disappoints. A heartbreaking, confounding, thoroughly outstanding book. Shows the complex intersection of the larger human condition and the intimate rural setting. Characters are vivid and real, and the ‘mystery’ beautifully plotted.

I can't stop reading Billee Letts' books because they are always enjoyable. Interesting people and story lines. I look for books set in small towns because the people are always so unique. I removed one star based on page 298. I realize this book was written in 2004, however, page 298 sunk into a speech like Hillary's "deplorables" statement. Hateful, derisive, and sterotypical. Stick to the story, Billee.

Mark, a young Vet whose passion is caring for animals is living an unfulfilling live as a Hollywood Vet. Soon after his father’s death ( his mother already gone), Mark discovers adoption papers. Thus begins his journey to figure out his roots. Where does he really belong? Mystery, lies, deceit and cover up with plenty of kindness, compassion and a blossoming love story keeps the story one of hope and moving forward. This book warmed my heart, and I won’t soon forget it

Billie Letts never fails to make a reader all warm and fuzzy by the end of her books.
Although Shoot The Moon wasn't quite in the league of Where The Heart Is..and The Honk And Holler Opening soon...it came close.
I felt that this one dragged a little bit in the middle and had a bit of a slump..but the ending was wonderful and the twist of who ended up being the killer, I don't think anyone would have seen coming.
All in all, still a great story

I have really enjoyed reading all of Billie Letts books which show humour through the poverty that is alive and well in the USA. I was so sorry to learn that she had died recently. Her memory lives on in her books and I would recommend this one in particular. All have given me an insight into her kindness and humanity and I have made them part of my own life. They have released me from the limitations of being English and made me realise that genuine people all over the world have really so much in common as well as the differences which are so often expressed.

Easy read but not without depth and interest. The story moved at a good step. I predicted the end but was happy that it did end as I thought. The second of Billie Letts' books I have read and love the atmosphere created with warm hearted people and bad guys too.
