A movie that would not have been out of place in the run of paranoid-political thrillers of the 1970s, Shooter works an entertaining variation on the assassination picture. Mark Wahlberg, carrying over good mojo from The Departed, slides neatly into the character of Bob Lee Swagger, master marksman. Swagger has retreated from his duty as an off-the-books hired gun for the military, having become disillusioned with his government (switching on his TV at his remote mountain cabin, he mutters, "Let's see what kind of lies they're trying to sell us today."). Ah, but the government needs Swagger to scope out the location of a rumored attempt on the life of the president, so a shadowy government operative (Danny Glover) begs Swagger to use his sniper's skills to out-fox the assassin. From there--well, spoilers are not fair, since the movie has a few legitimate shocks and a very nice wrong-man scenario about to unfold.
A novel by the Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Stephen Hunter gives the movie a logical spine, even if the premise itself is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. Wahlberg gets support from Michael Pena, as a skeptical FBI agent; Kate Mara, as a trustworthy widow; and Ned Beatty, trailing along memories of Network, as a supremely cynical Senator. Along with the well-executed action sequences (the previously unreliable director Antoine Fuqua gets it in gear here), the movie includes a few potshots at the Bush administration. No, that doesn't put Shooter at the level of The Parallax View or All the President's Men, but it provides some tang along with the flying bullets. --Robert Horton

I guess I’ll preface this by saying I'm not really a super huge fan of “action movies” to begin with, so good luck in agreeing with my opinion I GUESS.
Now, conceptually speaking, this actually isn't a terrible movie. There's something quite alluring about the underhanded nature of the of dangers of blind patriotism that are touched on in ‘Shooter’ (Though, I may be projecting and seeing things that weren’t really there) And this preface is included without being metaphorically beaten to death by the time the conclusion is reached. in addition to this, the plot is relatively straightforward and absolutely no previous military or other related experience is needed to understand what is going on as the plot develops.
I try not to complain too much about things that seem to be grounded from reality - because, I mean, it’s a freaking movie for crying out loud - But my primary complaint about the characters and elements in this movie seem to bleed over in to inconsistencies with the novel it is based off. For one, there is a certain amount of carelessness portrayed by the characters in this movie that I would not expect any way; ‘The Shooter’ goes to great lengths to convince its audience that Mr Swagger is the “best of the best in his field,” but his willingness to bend to authority figures without investigating the legitimacy of their position beforehand seems out of place given the context in which this occurs. Secondly, the romance in this film feels so forced and is so painfully cliche that it hurts to witness. How does Mr. Swagger go from simply meeting with his dead buddy’s wife to her being referred to as “h i s w o m a n” in the span of what feels like a couple of hours??? HOOOW???? 😢😢😢😢
A las! A silver lining awaits!
Despite feeling a bit mis-casted at times, you won’t see me complaining about getting to look at Wahlberg for the entirety of two hours. Between the vignettes of Marky Mark’s arm muscles and Kate Mara’s freckles my bisexuality has been shamelessly reaffirmed.
Not a terrible movie by any means…
Just….not my particular cup of tea.
P.S the first review you'll see here on Amazon, very long and many paragraphs - was copied and pasted almost entire;y from another website's reviews.

It was a lot of fun but not one I would watch again. Unfortunately I found the film very predictable and you seem to feel ' that you have seen this all somewhere before.
But it was however an enjoyable movie for the evening.
3.5
the transfer has its moments where it does look very nice, just these are few and far between and i thought the 4k Dolby Vision Stream on apple looked better imo
The Steelbook is very generic and boring, no imagination used on this release at all, just a photoshop copy and paste.
Excellent service from Amazon UK.
