Every gaming generation has an over-used genre. Back in the NES days, it was platformer here, platformer there, platformer everywhere. In the SNES and Sega Genesis days, it was 2D fighter here, 2D fighter there, 2D fighter everywhere. In the PS2 and Gamecube era, it was 3D platforming here, 3D platforming there, 3D platforming everywhere. Though I will agree that this "multiplayer shooter" generation is the worst, it will eventually either die out, or there will be more balance between shooters and other types of games.
I disagree. There are less shooters than other types of games. They are, however, much more popular. Think about it.
If you don't like the shooters, don't buy them. I bought three games for the xbox, none of which are shooters. I will buy Titanfall because I feel like it will redefine the shooter genre, which was starting to fall apart.
If you want to rip on shooters, at least rip on the ones that are doing NOTHING to advance the genre. At least they are trying to do something different with Titanfall. There are 30-40 shooters released every year that basically copy and paste gameplay we had 5-6 years ago. I give credit where credit is due, Titanfall looks amazing!!
Having played the beta or alpha or whatever it is, I think this game is great. I dig FPS games, but if you're on xbox one and looking for something different I'd highly recommend Max: The curse of brotherhood, only available for download, but very creative and fun for whole family.
I'm waiting for a developer to come up with a Freelancer kind of game for one of the consoles. I could live without tons of shooters and sports games. At the same time, I'd sure love to see a few more space sims. Now THAT'S an under-populated genre.
