The book itself is masterfully written. Fairbairn and Sykes had a real talent for explaining things in a way that's both simple to understand, and engaging. They include real world examples drawn from their first hand experience in the Shanghai Municipal Police Department that really illustrate the points they're trying to get across. I can see why these two were considered the finest combat instructors of their day. And to help, they have some great illustrations that are clear and demonstrate the techniques discussed. It's one of the best instructional books I've read. I'd also like to note that there are a few moments where a very British humor does shine through, it seems that Sykes and Fairbairn were looking to write something that they themselves would enjoy reading.
Additionally this book is a fun read for anyone interested in history as it is very much a product of it's time. You really get into the mindset of a Shanghai police officer during that time period when Shanghai was one of the world's most crime ridden cities. And something special that comes with this particular book is a wonderful foreword that adds some context and background to the writing, most notably by trying to explore the life of Eric Sykes.
So if you like guns or history this is an outstanding read.
This is the grand-daddy of modern shooting tactics.Sykes and Fairbairn developed a shoot-house, street tactics, handgun modifications, and training techniques that had to be so far outside the norm for that period, they must have been considered rogues.I wonder how either of these gentlemen would reaction to seeing modern firearms such as Glocks. Or, the myriad of modifications heaped onto a 1911.
This book is a pretty quick read and should be part of your collection if you are a serious shooter. Yet, I could only give it 4 stars because it is dated. But, to update the information would like repainting a piece of art.
However, don't dismiss most of Fairbairn & Sykes' advice as irrelevant. It worked against real people then and it'll work now. For example, their advice about using cover and concealment is still important today. I tried several of the combat techniques at the range (peripheral sight picture, no safety, finger outside trigger guard, muzzle down, one-armed firing stance) and, unbelievably, they worked!
If you read the their descriptions, you can tell that their writings had a profound influence on some of today's most popular gunwriters, including Mossad Ayoob. Fairbairn & Syke's peripheral aiming style isn't that different from Ayoob's stress point index. And Ayoob's stress point index works like a charm as well.
If you don't memorize anything else from this book, then memorize the fact that you should grip the pistol firmly! No target-style grip. And keep in mind the natural crouch when aiming. In summary, this is a text that is more important as a historical text. It's how our grandfathers and great-grandfathers were trained for fighting during WWII. But it also contains information that's relevant today.

It's very short, maybe an hours read.
The "practical" shooting info is very simple and straight forward, but you will not come away an expert on shooting. For that practice , practice , practice (safely !!)
