Once again, Carole and Jude turn sleuths to find out whodunit, with assistance from a cast of credible supporting characters, including Carole's lovable dog, Gulliver. *Starred Review* Two middle-age women, one a dour divorcée, the other a promiscuous New Age flake, are neighbors in the coastal English village of Fethering; they become, improbably, friends and, even more improbably, sometime sleuths. Such was the orginal premise for Brett’s Fethering series. It sounds contrived, but with the talented Brett, the character clash and the amazingly high homicide rate for a tiny village come across as both brilliant and perfectly reasonable. The secret is in Brett’s range. He moves effortlessly from sharp, pitiless physical description (e.g., a fiftyish woman who looks like Marilyn Monroe gone to seed) to flashes of compassionate insight (one of the sleuths, Carole Seddon, fears becoming a lone woman huddled in a shelter at the beach). Brett always spikes his plots with acerbic social commentary—his depiction of a Christmas Eve drinks party is as comically merciless an examination of characters’ pretensions as any Restoration comedy. In the latest Fethering, Seddon’s much looser friend, identified only as Jude, drags Carole into celebrating Christmas, starting with searching for the perfect gift at a trendy village shop and attending Jude’s Christmas party, which the shop owner and her music-producer husband also attend. A few days later the shop burns to the ground, and the body of this couple’s stepdaughter is discovered within. Like a number of other readers I've become addicted to this series. Be careful with this one, though. If you haven't read the preceding books you might want to read them first or skip chapter six. This is a party scene in which Mr. Brett manages to spoil at least three other stories in his description of various characters none of whom are essential to this plot. It's one thing to refer to characters or situations from previous books but don't give away major plot points.

The Fethering Twosome Strike Again

This is another entertaining book in the Fethering series. The time is around Christmas. The two friends and neighbors Carole and Jude have festivities planned. Jude is having an open house. Carole can't understand Jude's planning. How many guests? Whoever shows up. What time is it over? When the alcohol runs out. This all makes Carole nervous.

Carole is nervous already as she is having Christmas dinner for her son, daughter in-law and grand daughter. She has the usual gifts that she gives every year. They are two dress shirts for her son and lily of the valley c0l0gne for her daughter in law. Jude is appalled and suggests they go shopping together to look for alternatives.

They go to a new gift store in Fethering and Jude helps Carole find some fun gifts. One can imagine Carole grumbling under her breath the whole time about these gifts. Besides being neighbors and friends, they are amateur sleuths. They have solved many crimes around the Fethering area.

Soon a mysterious store fire happens and a body is found inside. To add to the mystery, the corpse has a bullet in its body. Jude and Carole take an interest in solving this crime and starts to investigate.

There were many suspects and red herrings. Just when you think you have it solved, you probably don't. I had an inkling who I thought was the murderer. I can't tell you why or it could be a spoiler. Then I kept changing my mind. It was like a magician having you guess which hand the coin is in. You are sure and when it is revealed, it is in another. I should have kept my initial guess as I was right. This book was another good read in the series. Good to be back with the Fethering twosome.

Eleven murders in a single small English coastal village ... and they've all been deftly solved by an unlikely pair of friends. Carole Seddon is a repressed, straight-laced divorcee whose solitary existence has been frequently disrupted by Jude, the colorful, outgoing neighbor who has become her closest friend. The chemistry between the two, who find pleasure in solving the extraordinarily frequent murders occurring in and around their town, is described with Brett's characteristically sarcastic and witty humor which is what makes these books so enjoyable. In this installment, Carole and Jude find themselves in the midst of the Christmas season. Carole is dreading her first real "family" Christmas since her divorce, a change that's been prompted by the birth of her grand-daughter, and is persuaded by Jude to shop in an eclectic new village shop to find unique gifts for her son and daughter-in-law. A few days later, after a bright Christmas party at Jude's home, the store burns down and the body of the owner's step-daughter is found in side, with a bullet in her back. Who killed the young woman with a tortured past? Jude and Carole are determined to find out - and they dig up a lot of surprising information along the way. Brett's caustic but funny commentary on village society - and humanity in general - along with the somewhat intricate plot made this another great addition to the series. Although, I do have to admit that I'm getting to the point where I wish Carole would just loosen up...can she really stay this spiky forever with Jude at her side???
