Then I saw the Shop Fox in 24 oz with a smaller diameter head that looked to be the right weight and size. While I didn't expect the quality of the Shop Fox mallet to compete with the "Wood is Good" I did think it would work just as well for my purposes.
First, while there are some slightly negative comments about the Shop Fox urethane mallets in other sizes; I have to say there is absolutely nothing wrong with this mallet. It should work as well as my other urethane mallets. The head and handle are not as finely finished as the made in USA "Wood is Good" mallets but it's still is very usable. The handle is not exactly (as one reviewer mentioned) a "two piece handle". There is a wooden plug where they add some type of ballast to make the head heavier. The Wood is Good mallets have the exact same plug in their heavier weight mallets.
I did uncover one personal issue with the mallet but I don't think that will impact another user in the way it did me. I bought the Shop Fox 24 oz mallet because I expected it to be about 6 oz heavier than my 18 oz "Wood is Good" mallet. This would have given me three urethane mallets with the same head size in increasing weights of 12 oz, 18 oz and 24 oz. Unfortunately for me, the Shop Fox 24 oz mallet isn't much heavier than the Wood is Good 18 oz. The 18 oz "Wood is Good" mallet weighs 21.Read more ›
