This is a small, but handy mallet for shop use. Just right for using with a chisel or to tap on something needing moved slightly into place. The price is right and it is handy on the workbench.

The head of this mallet is only about 1/2 the size of the one in the picture. Imagine standing the mallet with it's handle vertical, and then take about 1/2 the brass head off with a horizontal slice. That's about what you'll get. Next to a 16 oz wood & rubber head carvers mallet, this one looks like a toy. It may be that its going to be just dandy when you need to give a chisel a little whack, but I'm a little concerned that, with the small head, it could be a real knuckle smasher - but I must admit I haven't had a need to use it just yet. Will update when I've had a chance to try it out.

Both the 8 and 12 ounce versions of these are really nice, particularly for the price. Got these for carving and fine chisel work where I plan to choke up on the head and use it to rap the chisel butts with a lot of control. They work great for my working style.

The handles on mine were unfinished, which is fine. Saves me having to scrape them down for a finish I like. If that bothers you, beware. Also, these are small heads with very short handles. I don't know if they would satisfy someone looking to "swing" it like standard size mallets and hammers. You won't be carving any totem poles from logs with these. For me, fit and "finish" are fine and I recommend them.

I'm impressed light but for delicate caring very usefull in hard woods.
The head srews on to the handle with a brass stud, if any problem developes
Replacement is easy.

Joseph

Pretty nice. Small enough to fit into the somewhat-oversized tool roll I use for my carving chisels. Quality is fine. About a simple a tool as it gets.

The one thing that annoys me is that grotesque "SHOP FOX" stenciled across the crown in black letters. I took some abrasive paper and sanded that garbage off. Wouldn't have minded a nice engraved logo. Used to be a time when companies took great care that their branding devices (logos, letting, etc) were aesthetically pleasing.

Of course, I guess that's the age we live in- where one factory in China makes something and 100 different 'wholesalers' rebrand it with their own name for retail sale. As such, the sum effort of their brand is black letters hastily stenciled across whatever space is available.

Still, picky rant aside, you won't regret buying this. Holds well in the hand, strikes well. I don't mind buying simple stuff from the Orient (hammers, tool trays, etc). If any precision is involved, I generally stuck with brands of known quality standards.

Like many others, I buffed the brass head, for aesthetic purposes, and applied glue to the threads in the head into which the handle goes to keep it from loosening in use. I didn't see any point in coating the handle with a finish as some have done. After these initial tweaks, I have used the mallet quite a bit and had no problem at all. It is the perfect size for smaller work and is good looking on my work bench. I use it in wood carving.

Use this where ever i have to "tap" a steel surface and do not want to leave a mark or ding the surface. Perfect for adjusting plane iron reveal in wood planes.

Smaller than you think, it's perfect for what it is. Some hate the name imprint, but that doesn't bother me.

EDIT: Dropped it to one star. The handle wouldn't stay tight, and finally broke and cracked up near the head. This is after very light use.
