Top Customer Reviews
Considering everything including free shipping this saw was a bargan. The closest thing was an almost identical saw from Grizzly which was about $60 less (including shipping), the only difference was the Grizzly had a cheap stand/base and this Shop Fox had a really nice stand/base which had storage room, for about $600 shipping included.
The quality of this saw is as good, or better, than similar saws from Steel City, Jet and Delta at 1/2 to 2/3 the price. Only the Powermatic has a similar sized and similar designed saw with better guides and slightly better wheels, but it's double the price. If your gonna consider the Powermatic, then just go get the Laguna 14 inch European style saw for only $200 more and enjoy their really great saw which has even better guides, table, fence and a brake.
However if you want a simple quality 14 inch saw that is much less than the Jet, Steel City, Delta and Powermatic go get this Shop Fox or look at about 4 variations of this saw from Grizzly with prices ranging from $395 to $795 depending on things like stand, table/fence, wheel upgrades etc. Remember that Grizzly charges shipping, but this saw from Amazon.com comes with free shipping.
The saw has performed well for the six months I have used it.
Set up for the saw was fairly easy I did have a problem with the riser block, when I installed it
I had to re-tap one of the mounting bolt holes to make it fit right.
I use it for everything from re-sawing small log pieces to cutting angles for segmented bowls.
The only real problem I have had is that it seems to go through guide bearing on a regular basis.
The back support bearings went out the first week I used it and I will say that wood stock international
sent me new bearings right away. The only problem was the hassle of calling them several times.
I now just keep a supply of the bearings on hand they are very inexpensive. I purchase them from
VXB.com bearings. The part numbers are (6000-ZZ Premium metal shields 6000 2Z ball bearing 6000-2Z bearings ABEC3)
for the backup support bearings and (608-2RS two side rubber seals bearing 608-rs ball bearings 608 rs)for the
guide bearings. Backup bearings are 10 for $9.09 and the guide bearings are 10 for $6.60.
In all fairness I say replace on regular basis but its about every 2 months.
The dust collection isn't great but adequate, but than none of the tools in my shop are perfect.
All in all I would recommend the saw to a friend.
This is three months later I have found some thing about the saw I would like to share.
I reviewed an Alex Snodgrass band saw clip on utube, in it he said to check that the rubber tire was glued down
to the wheel. It wasn't! I had some trouble throwing blades off the saw and the no glue was the problem.
It was not glued from the factory so just FYI. I would recommend viewing it. I set the saw up to his specs and it
made a world of difference on how the saw ran. I also found that the thrust bearings on the saw are not the best
they used a mounting where the blade hit the side of the bearing, the best I think hit the bearing from the front.
Carter makes a replacement kit for this but its $179 I think, a little expensive. I cut a lot of green wood and I found that they make a two teeth per inch hook blade that really works. I couldn't find them on amazon. I order mine from Suffolk saw in Princeton Idaho. I hope these help, a slight demerit on shop fox with a few of these upgrades they could have made a better saw.
This has been in operation for about 3 months now and has been (mostly) flawless.
Easy setup (just make sure you have someone around to help lift the unit on the base, this thing is HEAVY!).
Cast iron wheels with tires already installed
Some convenient storage in the base
Solid cast iron table
Easy blade changes (check out Alan Snodgrass' excellent YouTube video on doing this right)
Solid miter fence
4" dust port; my setup is all 2-1/2" for the Shop Vac)
The trunion knobs are kinda hard to put on as the attaching bolts are free-floating on the table
The rip fence has a tendency to not lock down solidly (so I use clamps and an auxiliary fence when reswaing)
A feature we haven't used yet is the dual speed, but it appears easy to set up.
Also, buy other blades than the cheap one that comes with it.
So far, we've done a LOT of resaw work on 1x4 poplar with a 1/2"x3tpi blade at 3100FPM and it's been a dream. I also did a quick bandsaw box that came out well.
Certainly, as the shop grows, we'll be looking at more Shop Fox tools. If you're looking for a mid-price bandsaw, this is the one to get!
