I've decided to write a review of the W1812 because there are few reviews out there. Like many, I considered purchasing a Williams & Hussey. I could not justify the expense due to a small operation, especially since I could maximize my purchasing with Grizzly. For the price of 1 W1812 and a G0703P cyclone dust collector, I still am well under the price of a W&H.

This is my second molder/planer, a huge upgrade from my Craftsman 12 1/2" molder/planer. I considered a Woodmaster 718, however I decided that I was sick and tired of setting knives and gibs all the time...also, the W718 is a lot more expensive.

**Update Jan14**: I plan on getting a Woodmaster 725 in order to make larger profiles that I am unable to make on a W1812. The Woodmaster is an excellent machine, but I recommend the W1812 if most of your work will be 6" or less. If you need large volume, you might want to start out with a Woodmaster 718 or 725.

Construction:

The build of the machine is very strong. The shipping company that shipped my machine probably dropped the crate off the back of the truck going down the highway...I am not exaggerating. It was trashed...and I was p'ssed. However, upon putting the machine together, to my amazement, the machine didn't even have a scratch. Grizzly wisely secured the motor with a bracket preventing damage. All other components were nicely packaged.

The business portion of the machine is solid cast iron, so the machine is heavy...a downside for some; I recommend you by a mobile base for it. Get one that is rated x2 as heavy as the machine, so a minimum of 400lb capacity.. I love the extension and built in "T" slots when using the included guide rails. I had to build custom ones on my old Craftsman, which are annoying to adjust.

I bought this machine to do custom trim pieces. I wish that i could have stayed with a machine that would have been american made, but with the large difference in price I made this purchase. For the woodworker that is considering a moulder I would recommend this moulder!

1. Shipped and packaged well and came in good condition, and all parts were there.

2. Assembly was easy and the machine was only in a few different pieces.

NOTE: Get help with the headstock! I am a big guy and this was very heavy for me alone!

3. The knives were very easy to change from planing to moulding!! Very Nice!!

4. There was some set up from the planing to moulding feature especially with the feed roller tension, but it did not take much work to prepare for the moulding setup.
If you are a a person that has made it all the way to making your own mouldings you should be able to figure out this setup!

5. There was not much more to do, other than the obvious test of moulding some stock!! That night I ran 16 feet of birch crown and it came out great!! The noise makes you think that you definitly did something wrong and just ruined your brand new toy, but don't worry you you can always buy another one!!LOL The one thing I would say is that if you think you are going to run a bunch of 2 1/4" trim for your house and save a bunch of money......you will probably realize that you cannot compete with the large millwork distributers!! But if you want the satisfaction of being able to create any spieces of trim, in any profile you want, this is a GREAT MACHINE FOR THE PRICE!!

I had to give this machine a 4 star review because it was missing the made in USA sticker!!LOL I know I know..... But that is one expensive sticker!! Happy Moulding!!!

Shop Fox had a sale on this product and I decided that I couldn't pass up a good deal. I originally was going to purchase from another company, which would ship by truck, but I would have to unload it, 2 cartons 150 lb each. (Not going to happen).
I checked out Amazon and the trucking company would unload it and put it in my garage, no extra charge.(Now that is service). Assembly was a no-brainer. However you will need a helper to get the moulder/planer head on the stand. (or a rope and pulley from the rafters).
I haven't purchased moulding knives yet, but I have tried out the 7 inch planer knives that came with it and I am pleased with results. I purchased this for making some baseboard moulding. If you need to move it around get the HTC3000 mobile base.

I love this planer molder and find it very versatile and easy to use. For the money I think it can't be beat. I do both surface planing and edge planing with this machine, as well as cutting custom molding. Knives are easy to install. I can't give it a 5 star rating though because it arrived with a broken part, apparently a shipping and packaging issue. The electric cord stop which protrudes about 1 inch on the outside of the cabinet was broken off. This has no impact on the performance of the machine and Amazon offered to fix it but I haven't gotten around to that yet, I'm too busy using the machine.

If I were designing this machine there are a couple of things I would improve:

First of course, would be the way the cord comes through the body. I would do something that wasn't such an accident waiting to happen in shipping. It would be nice if there were a couple of opposing hooks to wrap the cord around when not in use.

Second, I would change the way the adjustment of the rollers is done. Using hex wrenches on the inside of the head is problematic due to small space and accuracy is difficult. It is very easy to move the rollers out of adjustment as you tighten the hes bolt to lock the roller in place. This is my biggest complaint about this machine.

Third, I would etch direction arrows into the crank handle. I made some stickers with my Brother label maker but before I did that I was constantly moving the head in the wrong direction.

Other than those things, I think this machine is a fine buy and I'm happy to give it 4 stars.
