The one thing that I wished I had known prior to purchase is the air flow difference using a 2.5" hose V. the 1.25" hose that comes with the unit. This difference was accidentally demonstrated the evening that I received the unit as I made a first run through the house with the unit. When I reached the living room I removed the hose from the intake side of the unit with the intent of putting it into the exhaust side of the unit so that I could blow some dust out of an area slightly out of reach of the hose. This brought an amazing change in motor tone and an exhaust tone reminiscent of a small jet engine. The more interesting thing occurred when I turned away from the unit for just a moment to move something out of the way. When I turned back to insert the hose in the exhaust side of the unit, I found the unit was no longer next to me. It had actually propelled itself several feet across the floor (laminate flooring) - maybe the jet engine comparison was more appropriate than I originally thought.
I finished the clean up that night with the 1.25" hose but the next day I put the 2.5" hose kit on order. When the hose arrived I set out to once again clean the house. With the large hose installed the unit is slightly toned down and there is slightly less air flow through the unit, but I never have to drag the unit along as I clean because a gentle tug on the hose will still start the unit rolling across the floor propelled by the air flowing through the unit. And when it comes to the actual cleaning - lots of pet hair on laminate flooring - the 2.5" hose wins hands down in the cleaning contest.
The real kicker is that I can't notice any suction difference between the two units even though the larger one is rated 3 HP higher. Not happy with the suction of the larger unit. The problem is that it comes with a narrow 1.25 hose, nozzel and wands which are constantly jamming due mostly to the weak suction.
I imagine that if I were just vacuuming dust, it probably would be usable. But, I have 4 large labradors who shed enough hair weekly to knit a whole new dog. Plus, the younger ones like to chew paper and plastic cups/water bottles into small 2-3" pieces. This is mainly why I bought the larger model, to pick up this debris. Due to the hose's narrow diameter, I have to stop and unclog it and/or the tools every couple of minutes. Not good, and very frustrating. Plan to return the unit immediately.
UPDATE: Changed my rating from 1-star to 3-stars. Well, on a hunch, I swapped out the 1.25" hose and replaced it with a 2.5" hose (the intake hole is big enough to do this). Wow, what a difference. Suction is phenomenal and no more clogs. If only it had shipped with the larger hose and tools, and if it had been better packaged for shipping, I would have given this a 5-star rating. With the larger hose kit, I'd happily recommend this product to anyone. :)
-The 8 gallon size is easy to roll and not too heavy if lifted/carried. Perfect for cleaning baseboards, ceilings or moving to the garage to clean vehicles.
-The 5.5 Hp motor is quieter than expected and is quite powerful. I gave it a test run by using the floor attachment to vacuum a room with a vinyl floor covering. The suction was so strong the attachment kept sticking to the floor but it picked up everything in it's path.
-This model can be used as a blower-I didn't recall seeing this in the description but was pleasantly surprised to see, in the instruction manual, that this function is included and can be used by moving the hose from the front of the unit to the exhaust opening on the back.
-On Board Tool Attachment Not Included
The on board tool attachment should be standard on all Shop Vacs as you have many attachments/pieces to keep up with. You can, however, purchase the accessory separately. I'm trying to find one now.
-Strong New Smell
I would caution anyone who is sensitive to odors this vacuum might not be for you. It has a really strong odor, similar to creosote treated lumber or tar. I assembled the vacuum at the office and placed in the cab of my truck (windows vented). When I opened the door to get in that evening......WOW! It's not as noticeable in open areas but you can still smell it.....Hopefully this will diminish with use.
