For carrying around by the handle, this vac is awkward - very nose heavy - the on/off switch is difficult to get to - 1 1/2 inches past my thumb. Carrying it around with the included nylon strap helps - still can't get to the on/off switch. The side latches have been changed to solid plastic and seem adequate.
In terms of performance this machine is very much like the Oreck XL that I also own. Orick's vac suction is the same, somewhat quieter - db70 at ear level. Oreck is one pound heavier, has an 18' power cord and a 4.5' flex hose.
What is not mentioned is the price of the Shop Vac bags -(part #901-46)5 pack, $14 = $2.80 per bag, vs. Oreck XL bags (part #pkbb12 dw) 12 pack, $8.70 = 73 cents per bag. Note, however, that the Oreck XL is $30 more than the Shop Vac. Ah, Mr. Socrates, do you prefer a cup or a mug?
Many times electronic equipment gets dusty inside and as everyone should know, heat build up due to accumulation of dust particles inside your system is the bane of all electronica. Enter the Shop Vac Hippo. I no longer need to use compressed air canisters to blow out dust from keyboards, computers, servers or any other type of electronic equipment as this thing easily has the power of 10 compressed air canisters and never runs out of air.
I've been using my first one since 2006 and it has never failed me once. Just be sure to change your filter bags when they're full and this thing will work for a very long time. There has been no change in the strength of the vacuum since i first bought it which is amazing. The sound may have changed a bit but I didn't buy this to use in a library. All in all, this portable vacuum should be high on any Field Engineer or IT Technician's must have list.
Additionally, this vacuum has a nozzle for pretty much anything. You will likely have to buy it from the manufacturer's website though. I don't remember if I bought mine from Amazon. I have a keyboard nozzle, and adapters to use smaller nozzles for more precise and powerful cleaning jobs.
The shoulder strap is comfortable, the cord is long enough to go everywhere, it's light, not too loud, suction strong and runs non-stop without overheating. I ordered the wand extension, you can use any vac tools you want. It's compatible with them all.
It's great for cleaning up after the Grandchild. I've never been so excited about cleaning in my life. I hope it lasts forever!

I end up gave it away for my guy friend, and I am back using the light vacuum.
