Emma Bennett is a primary school teacher that goes to the market every Friday to shop for her elderly neighbor, Joan. Greg harper is a divorcee and father of two, he also shops at the supermarket every Friday for is elderly grandfather, Jack. After they spot each other while looking for tomatoes, they are instantly attracted to each other. The third time they see each other he has his kids Sophie & Toby, but these kids are familiar, in fact she teaches one of them. From there, their relationship is nothing short of a roller-coaster ride.
We have Emma's sketchy ex-boyfriend Bailey, that just will not go away. He also takes a keen interest in Greg because of his job. We have the jealous ex-wife Josie, who thinks she can do whatever she pleases, and tries to break them up. They have so many factors against them, yet they make it work.
I enjoyed "shopping for love"! I felt the characters were realistic, and that the story flowed at a nice even pace. It was well-written, fairly decent in length, and packed the perfect blend of both romance and drama. Emma and Greg were sweet together. The children were cute and also provided some pretty funny moments (since they tend to talk before thinking).Emma's relationship with friend and fellow teacher Jenny, was a delight to read. I looked forward to their little moment's together .Last but not least, I hated both Bailey and Josie, but you're supposed to hate the mischief-makers. Overall, it was a pretty good book, I laughed, and I cried, all while rooting for the happy ending.
I'm in love with the cover art; initially that's what lured me to this book. I'm a sucker for an appealing cover.
Would I recommend it: Yes!
This is Lynette Sofras' third novel and it is another winner. Her romances are beautifully-written, the language is fluent (and grammatically-correct - so rare these days!) the characters are well-drawn and the plot has such depth and variety that the reader is hooked from the first page. I love Ms Sofras' villains. I want to find them and strangle them before they spoil everything. It is so nice to read romance that has so much more to offer than the usual boy meets girl, a misunderstanding arises, it is all cleared up and everyone lives happily ever after.
Ms Sofras has everything it takes to be a best-selling author. I shall watch her career with interest and look forward immensely to her next novel. Keep writing!
In this skilfully told story the author has blended realism and romance: realism in the depiction of a very modern situation where two people meet who have broken marriages behind them and romance in the sensitive description of the love that develops between them.
There is drama and poignancy in the passages where each is confronted by the partner who has mistreated them and now would like to have them back and the author shows wisdom and sensitivity in these portrayals of human nature. I even found myself feeling pity for the erstwhile victimiser, yet at the same time appreciating they were having their come-uppance. I think this is the sign of a good writer that they can make us feel compassion even for the undeserving. Yet there is satisfaction when goodness and kindness win over selfishness and greed, leaving the reader with the sense that there is justice in this world after all. This story left me with a lot to think about and surely that is the mark of a successful novel.
