Usage update: I have put this paddle through the paces of both a gentle lake for several hours, as well as kayaking around 4-5 miles of the Colorado River while it was running around 13,300cfs and it held up fine on both occasions. I don't think I would advise using it to push yourself off of rocks or away from the bank of a river unless you do it cautiously. Remember, this is a device used to propel the kayak on the water's surface, not to get it unstuck from rocks or dirt. I would suggest carrying a long stick with you if you want something to get you out of tight spots, and stick with using this item for what it was designed for. Doing that should get you a great amount of usage out of this paddle!
Review Update: August 1st 2014:
I contacted the company like a commenter mentioned to do and they sent me a new paddle!!! awesome! one star to four star for me. fantastic customer service!
When I emailed Shoreline support asking if I can get a replacement blade, they came back quick (first thing Monday) and decisive, got my contact information and with nothing more than pictures for evidence, shipped me a new whole paddle. That is support you would expect on a >$200+ blade on one that was $35. Pretty amazing.
Moral of the story - it is a decent paddle, works well, but is not recommended for pushing off with it's tip - something you may occasionally have to do unfortunately. I for one will be getting a more expensive blade as I go in places like inlets where a broken blade could mean you take a dip in the ocean waves, but all and all I am happy with the quality for $35 and also the tech support was surprisingly good.
