From the Back Cover

Can you multiply 362 x .5 quickly in your head? Could you readily calculate the square of 41? How much is 635 divided by 2½? Can 727,648 be evenly divided by 8?
If any of these questions took you more than a few seconds to solve, you need this book. Short-Cut Math is a concise, remarkably clear compendium of about 150 math short-cuts—timesaving tricks that provide faster,e asier ways to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
By using the simple foolproof methods in this volume, you can double or triple your calculation speed—even if you always hated math in school. Here's a sampling of the amazingly effective techniques you will learn in minutes: Adding by 10 Groups; No-Carry Addition; Subtraction Without Borrowing; Multiplying by Aliquot Parts; Test for Divisibility by Odd and Even Nunmbers; Simplifying Dividends and Divisors; Fastest Way to Add or Subtract Any Pair of Fractions; Multiplying and Dividing with Mixed Numbers . . . and more.
The short-cuts in this book require no special math ability. If you can do ordinary arithmetic, you will have no trouble with these methods. There are no complicated formulas or unfamiliar jargon—no long drills or exercises. For each problem, the author provides an explanation of the method and a step-by-step solution. Then the short-cut is applied, with a proof and an explanation of why it works.
Students, teachers, businesspeople, accountants, bank tellers, check-out clerks—anyone who uses numbers and wishes to increase his or her speed and arithmetical agility, can benefit from the clear, easy-to-follow techniques given here.

What a great little book! If you are like me, doing most of your math through computers, you may find the need to go back and brush up on the fundamentals. For me, one of the most valuable sections was on how to set up a columnar addition problem to work it left to right. I can do long division, algebra....you name it...but I have had problems adding columns of numbers in the conventional manner. Perhaps its a form of dyslexia. Anyway, Kelly shows you how to work the problems left to right, which I found helpful. His explanation of aliquot relationships was better than I got in junior high.

I like the emphasis on learning to work the problem to the level of precision you need. Say, if your house is so many square feet rounded and you want to find out how much paint will cover the surface, you may require 5.452 gallons of paint, but you'll have to buy 6 gallons from the store. So what's the point of the precision?

This book is exceptionally well written. Each problem is worked out or resolved completely. When I used it, I covered up the answers and worked each problem. I spent no more than 20-30 minutes a day to keep it fresh and drudgery free.

In my online bookselling business I live a life dominated by numbers so anything I find that speeds the manipulation of large computations is a godsend. This little book handles the equation nicely. Its unassuming stature hides a powerhouse of mathematical linguistics that brings speed and better accuracy to a wide range of numerical problem solving situations. It's simple, clean-cut approach to finding easy solutions to everyday math problems should be a tremendous help to everyone who reads it whether it's for business or personal use.

Being slightly math phobic, I have always tried to find easier ways to solve math problems. This book gave my current methods credibility and gave me new ideas and methods to try. It even helped me feel more confident about my abilities. I'm sure just about anyone could get something out of this book.

I liked this book because it showed me how to approach simple math problems in flexible ways. In short, the techniques were like many algebra problems I had dealt with; if you don't like the form or layout of a problem, change it to something simpler or nicer or else think of it in a different way.

Great tips for saving time in manual calculations and building arithmetic skills as you begin to see patterns that are not self-evident to most of us. This comes in handy when you are stuck without a calculator (or when someone sticks it to you without a calculator, like on the MCAT).

The printed book is great quality and a good deal, like all Dover Books. The Kindle version is wonky, like all Kindle books with mathematical formulae, but the price of the Kindle edition is so reasonable it can easily be forgiven, so long as you have a Kindle with a larger screen (I'm using an 8.9") or a PC to view it on. The smaller Kindles might display the math text in a font too miniscule to read, but I don't have one to see.

Highy recommended.

I like this book because it taught me some quick ways to do math and to figure out stuff in my head without writing it down on paper. I would definitely advise other people to try it out and I'm sure they will not be disappointed

If you work with numbers like me, this book so far is a good read. I haven't completely read it, but what I have, I have put to practical use and its good thus far. After I've completed reading it, I will give to my high school freshman who is a math wiz to see if she can put it to good use. I would recommend this book to anyone as it is definitely an easy read so far and very understandable.
