There were scenes with Anna-Lise and Jace, her boyfriend, that were one-sided and unfair. I questioned, repeatedly, why Anna-Lise's and Garth's significant others would stay with them when they were so insecure about their standing in the relationship and with the tight friendship between Anna-Lise, Garth and their friends. This is the thing, which I had to remind myself as I read, people stay in doomed relationships for all kinds of reasons. People try to change the person they're with to get what they think they want and/or need.
Relationships can be messy and people, even good people, can make poor decisions that hurt others. Overall, The Short Game is a solid read.
The Short Game made me remember my own youth, the group we moved around in like a pack, and the dynamics of that pack. However, when the members of the group begin to recognise their attraction for one another, the dynamic is upset and the status quo changes. The intense relationship between 6 young people, all with a passion for golf, survives most interruptions along the way. However, they are now hitting 30 and whether they like it or not, the nesting instinct is kicking in. The unwitting Nadine and Jace find themselves trying to make inroads to the tightly knit group, without success and thus destructive jealousies are aroused. This story is so filled with angst and remorse, frustrations and heartache that you one feels 18 and uncertain all over again. Ms Campbell certainly knows how to draw her readers into the story and make them feel with the various parties. An excellent read.
This book didn't grab me in the way many do. Saying that I really enjoyed it but could put it down and read it when I had the chance rather than not being able to put it down. I felt it was very drawn out and it could have been written better with more added to it rather than being padded out in the way it was.
It was a lovely romance but you knew what was coming from less than half way through you just didn't know how they would get there.
I would recommend it if you like a nice cosy romance without all the graphic sex that some have. I enjoyed it and will read the rest of the series to see what happens with them. I like the style the author had and will read more books by them. I'd say a book for a weekend or holiday romantic read.
