It's hard to understand why we can embrace pain and desolate resolve so deeply. Even harder to imagine the soul capable of not only living in that darkness but actually finding a sort of light there marked by genius and focus. Examples in literature are relatively rampant and song finds occasion with players (losers in the end) such as Hank Williams, Robert Johnson, Gram Parsons and... a drowned soul such as Brian Jones. Want a modern one? John Murry. I spoke to him once via phone as he bristled with energy and hope. It was around the occasion of his first solo effort, Graceless Age. He sucked me in earnestly and almost heartlessly since I became deeply committed to his music and his life... inseparable elements it would seem in a dark and scary place occupied by... him. And we can watch that world and listen to its soundtrack and hopefully find redemption on offer but... NOT for him. Please take care of yourself John. Even if it means never having to make another musical sound ever. That said...your sounds are precious, beyond precious.

Judging from some of the comments here, I was expecting the sonic equivalent of a Johnny Dowd album. "A Short History of Decay" is marvelous. The production is more spacious than on The Graceless Age, while delivering the same musical ingredients. I like it every bit as much, the ensemble interplay is more visceral. Highly recommended.
