From the Inside Flap

Carol struck the ground with a sharp cry, and she let out a wail as something hard jabbed her in the stomach. Sobbing, she rolled over onto her side and curled into a ball, holding her injured belly tightly.

She squeezed her eyes closed and tried to catch her breath, yet each time she did, the pain renewed itself, and she broke into another fit of crying.

Carol didn't know how long she laid there, but when she finally was able to stop her tears and look around, Annette and Billy were nowhere to be seen. She pushed herself into a sitting position and shuddered at the pain as it pulsated through her entire body. Carol tried to stand up, but her injury hurt too much.

Instead, she leaned against the nearest headstone and closed her eyes. After several minutes, Carol opened her eyes and saw the sky was darkening. Storm clouds were coming in from the south, and the wind had picked up its pace. The leaves and branches of the birch trees around Hall Burial Ground twisted and bent in ways that didn't seem possible. Carol tried to take hold of the headstone and pull herself up, but when she reached up, the pain in her stomach exploded, coursing through her and stabbing each limb.

"No," she gasped, sinking back down. Images of her mother and father yelling at her, of Annette lying about what had happened, filled her mind, and Carol couldn't bear it. Sobbing, she tried to crawl off of the grave, but something stopped her.

The soft rustle of fabric and the whisper of shoes on grass. Around her, the wind increased, and she huddled closer to the headstone. The sound of the shoes and the fabric frightened her. She did not think it might herald the return of Annette and Billy, or that it might be someone looking to help.

She knew there was something wrong about the burial ground. Something that didn't want her there.

I don't want to be here, either, Carol thought, shuddering. But I can't go. Not yet.

As the thought crossed her mind, she heard whispering. Soft, subtle words, all of them unintelligible. They were bad words. Not in the sense that she would have been punished for saying them, but that they were just
bad.

Bad things would happen if she knew what they meant. Things would die. Not just animals and bugs, but people, too.

Especially people, Carol understood.
