And yet, beneath the fast-paced, sometimes slangy diction of a world of podcasts, webcasts, blogging and texting, come a set of carefully, almost classically, crafted plots, such as I thought were never to be part of the art of the short story again.
The upbeat, conversational, wisecracking narratives make some of the depths in a few stories almost easy to miss, on a first reading, but I found that many of the stories lingered with me and drew me back for closer examination--a few handed me some naughty chuckles--and here and there, I was rather surprised to catch myself considering some of Braynard's characters and their strange predicaments later on.
Quite a few of the stories take us to imaginary settings or worlds, with impossible premises; others take us to meet people here, in our world, facing more mundane conflicts. Some take us by surprise with O'Henry twists or with bizarre technical gotchas. All the stories feel shot through with a youthful zeal and delight in the fun of fashioning and telling stories.
There's so much variety of theme and setting in this collection, that it would be very unlikely for a reader not to find several that especially appealed. All of the included tales are refreshingly short and trip along at a fast clip (sometimes almost an impatient clip, in fact!)--but it's an age of lighted screens, not printed paper, and rides on jet planes, rather than quiet evenings by the fire in the library, and there's no mistaking that these are stories by a writer of our present time.
I rated Shorter Stories with 5 stars because I have not read this format in years and found it very refreshing. The humor is classic and clean and although the stories are short, Braynard provides enough character background and scene description to fully understand where you are in the story and what's going on. Braynard made every word count and the outcome is a well-flowing series of mostly humorous and sometimes quirky short stories that will make your before-bed reading time a pleasure.
I'm about half way through the book and looking forward to reading the rest during the holiday downtime. Each story is long enough to captivate, but short enough to digest on the bus.
There's deeper lessons in each of the stories, a starting point for the brain to wonder after one closes the cover. A sign of quality in my eyes, and I'm looking forward to more works from this author.
I generally don't do this, but I plan to pass this book around to other people after I'm finished with it. As the title of the review implies, the stories work on several levels and different people will get something different out of reading them. All in all; recommended.
