The last edition of the "Flagship" publication "PASSPORT to Wold Radio" was in 2009. In the first decade of this century, the most important EMISSIONS of Government sponsored Europe, were dissolved. I used to listen BBC, Radio Netherlands, Radio Exterior de España, Radio Taiwan, etc. Now in the best o the cases they went to the Internet. I knew this entities were good will Station or Propaganda of the old time Colonialist States, oriented to calm down the resentment of the Old Colonies, but they had very interesting programs that I enjoyed. After more that 10 years of been inactive, I started again with Interest in the World Band. Around 2003 I bought a Eton shortwave radio receiver, it was very good at the time. A few years ago, I trashed it, together with several dozens of books. Now I Started by searching of old Shortwave radio receiver. After several adquisiton I learned that I was wrong. There are in Amazon very good new radio receiver,at a fraction, that the best rated were, at the begining of this century. I also bought this book, and 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 of the PASSPORT to World Band books
There are new Actors in the spectrum. I am interested in knowing, what the Bad the Ugly and the Goods have to say. I want listen the Surveillance State of China. The Totalitarian estate of Russia, India, Taiwan etc.
I am optimistic of the future of the mankind.
Thanks to God I am a healthy, intelectual 80 years old man. Most of my life I haven't eat "Junk Food"
Good luck with the Shortwave Listening. My opinión is that Shortwave still has a future.

This book is a must for anyone listening to shortwave radios or interested in becoming an amateur radio licensed individual. I've yet to finish reading this book because I'm enjoying everything in it from nostalgia to the ionospheric layers in the atmosphere above the earth that bounce signals back and around the planet.
Mr. Helms presents his materials in a smooth, easy to understand manner, that invites the reader to keep on turning the pages. I will eventually go back into this book to glean the frequency listings out of his carefully laid out paragraphs. He talks about antennas in a digestible way that makes the subject interesting as well as informative.
Early in 2013 I decided to study and take the Technician FCC test to become a 'HAM' radio operator and succeeded in this endeavor. Next I purchased a book titled 'The ARRL General Class License Manual' and began a long and sometimes memory splitting journey toward passing this next FCC test. I was simultaneous reading Mr. Helm's book and it not only cleared up many questions that arose about radio and radio propagation, but it also helped me answer test questions properly! I passed the General Class test missing only one question!
When I finish this book I'll come back here and add any pertinent thoughts that arise. If you are fascinated with radio and listening to the world in so called 'real time' I recommend you learn how to do it and get the most from the hobby. You will not regret it. I know we think of the internet as the most current form of information gathering that exists but think about it, how can the internet beat the immediacy of hearing live events as they happen?
Many considerations one needs to make when deciding to listen to the world via shortwave radio are covered in the book. This book helps the beginner in preparing to listen not only by explaining the operation of the radio frequency spectrum, but also with the mechanical aspects involved; including radio choices, antenna needs and seasonal as well as chronological listening periods. Things that most people haven't a clue about.
Again, when I do finish this book I will return to this review with a few more specifics that I feel will interest potential purchasers. Until then, happy shortwave listening.

First part of the book is pretty good. Second half of the book about listening to various international transmissions, is woefully out of date. This second edition is circa 1993. My advice would be to find a more recent text/

Great book but dated...
Reviewed in Canada on February 4, 2017Verified Purchase
Bought this book as a shortwave listening reference. If you are new to SWL type listening there is a ton of information in this book, but it is dated and a lot of shortwave broadcast radio station have disappeared over the years and moved to internet only stations. A bit of a shame really as there were a lot of fabulous SW broadcast stations out there that have disappeared. But if you want to learn more about short-wave listening and find out where the still existing stations reside this is a great resource. Just remember that some of them may no longer be there. All in all I am happy with this book!

Many things have changed with the arrival of the internet (many international broadcasters are gone) but it remains a useful reference for rediscovering shortwave radio

A classic. Many things have changed with the arrival of the internet (many international broadcasters are gone) but it remains a useful reference for rediscovering shortwave radio.
