He arrived at the scene; his backup had disappeared. Then he heard the screams. Peeking around the corner of the tenement apartment building he saw two men holding down a young naked girl, viciously raping her while she screamed in absolute terror.

In his first three years on patrol, Officer Sean Mulcahy arrested murderers, rapists, armed robbers, drug dealers, prostitutes, pimps, and encountered department and political corruption at the highest levels. He suffered a bruised trachea, a broken hand, heat stroke, a fence-punctured hand, two broken teeth, and a severe head injury. He was shot at and covered with human and animal excrement, lice, fleas, and other parasites while working in an extremely dangerous part of Kansas City, enduring it all to protect and serve the citizens in his district.

Shotgun Summer is a collection of over sixty-five true stories of his first three years on patrol.

A true to life account of police work in Kansas City, MO.
5 out of 5 stars
A true to life account of police work in Kansas City, MO.
This book is a true to life account of police work in a violent, unforgiving district of Kansas City, MO during the 1980s. The stories are remarkably relevant to today’s dialogue of policing in America and make you contemplate: what motivates someone to choose a profession in the service of others? What is the sacrifice? How do you survive? What are the limitations and misconceptions of policing? What would a reasonable officer do? What if it is too much— or not enough?

I have read more than 10 books written by police officers about their stories while on duty. This book is in my top three books for it's no-nonsense clear and fascinating style of writing. This book was hard to stop reading, but at the same time it is hard to keep reading for a long time. Even reading some of the stories took a toll on me and I had to stop reading and take a walk or something. I can't even imagine how hard this author's life was as an Officer. The stories are gritty and real. There were several stories where policemen shot pigeons for fun which disgusted me. Overall, I recommend this book to everyone, to gain more empathy and respect for the police everywhere.

I have read several books of police officers lives. This contains the grossest, sadest, scariest events of a police officer I have ever read. God bless this policeman. He and his family pay a terrible price doing a thankless job.

This book provided the most realistic insight into what a cop’s life is like for those sincere about the career and the sacrifice made.

I have always been fascinated with police procedural novels. This novel by Sean Mulcahy presents this in a raw form. It gets down to the rather dark side of life that police have to deal with every day in every part of the country. It gives you a perspective on how it can effect the lives of the people who enforce our laws. I have a new appreciation for what our police deal with every day.

This book, Shotgun Summer was an exciting and very interesting book to read. It is also a bit terrifying. It is true story of what life is really like for a police officer from the academy to everyday on the streets. The firsthand account is an easy read will have you wanting to read it cover to cover. It is one of the best books I've ever read.

I have a new found appreciation for all that protect and serve. I grew up in Mayberry R.F.D. compared to what this officer went through. Thanks for your service!
