The late Sam Francis (1947-2005) was a lion of what he called the real Right--those who, besides advocating limited government, states' rights, separation of powers, popular traditions, and the Bill of Rights, believe the U.S. is an organic product of Western European culture, not an artifice founded on some airy proposition (e.g., "All men are created equal"). Accordingly, he deplored massive immigration, multiculturalism, and minority special pleading. If he'd ever been an ardent Republican, the party's uncritical free-trade globalism, inattention to conservative issues, and relentless expansion of government made him one of its most furious critics. He came to see Republican conservatism as ignorant and unprincipled, and its cooption by contemporary neoconservatives as so much liberal subversion. He cogently and wittily held forth on all this in a syndicated column as well as carefully argued, informative, and impressively erudite speeches and journal articles. The examples of the latter included here afford eye-opening perspectives on civil disobedience, the Religious Right, the Second Amendment, egalitarianism, cultural symbols, cultural elites, and more. The Late Sam Francis was a real Tour de Force and I highly recommend any of his writings. A must read for anyone concerned about the present state of affairs here in America.

I first started reading Sam Francis's columns around 2000 through my dad's subscription to the Conservative Chronicle. As a young man just starting college, his writings were pivotal in developing my understanding of American politics and culture. Tragically, Sam left us too soon and passed away after undergoing surgery in 2005. I'll always have him in mind though, as we share the same birthday. "Shots Fired" is Sam's final, powerful book, a collection of wide-ranging essays on politics, culture and identity in America. I just learned of this Kindle edition and will be buying the book again in this form. If you have never heard about Dr. Francis or know little about him, check out his past columns online and his Wikipedia page. Sam earned a PhD in Modern History from UNC Chapel Hill and far more than just a pundit, Sam was an accomplished political theorist in the tradition of James Burnham, his greatest influence about whom he wrote a book. Sam's writings on the "Middle American Revolution" presaged the Tea Party, though the governing elites have apparently co-opted that movement. Suffice to say, buy this book, read Sam's columns, he was a visionary and one of the most profound and perceptive observers of modern America.

Sam Francis hit hard at the Republican party for betraying the values of their natural consituency in Middle America. He roasted that party among others well deserving his critique. This book records the plain words of Sam Franics as his frank pen struck at many.

I had heard of Mr Francis' column when he was alive but had not read it. Thanks to his estate and the publishers this fine collection brings me what I had missed. Others who find the shortage of true conservative voices in the mainstream media will appreciate the insights shared in this book.

Of what consists a true American "blood and soil" like that spoken of by Patrick Buchanan? You will find it in this work.
