Depeche Mode does a great job of scattering their remixes across formats: for any single, if you want to get all the mixes, you have to buy the 7", 12" and CD versions. This single is no different: all of the mixes on this vinyl single are unique to the vinyl release and you can't get on other official releases (they may exist on promotional CDs somewhere). Note: there's no 7" release of this single, just the CD and 12" vinyl.
Typically, you can find some real gems on the vinyl-only singles. Some of the mixes of "Heaven" and "Soothe My Soul" (both from DM's 2013 album "Delta Machine") are quite decent!
Sadly, this is an exception. Of the six mixes, only one is worth listening to (The Uberzone Remix). The rest are throwaway and completely uninteresting. Is it worth $15 for 1 mix? You decide, but I'd suggest avoiding this release unless you're an avid collector. Casual fans should probably just get the "Maps Remix" from the CD single (available as a single-track MP3 download) - it's the best of all the "Should Be Higher" remixes and the most economical.

I have been a Depeche Mode fan for many, many, many, many moons now and can safely say they are one of bands responsible for providing "accreditation to the remix". Now the following statement will be totally subjective among DM fans, but I think the last batch of quality remixes fall somewhere between "Ultra" and "Exciter". I am not counting bootleg mixes, remixes found online or underground remixes. I am strictly talking about studio/officially promoted by the record label "remixes".
This brings me to this remix EP/maxi single of "Should Be Higher", the third single from "Delta Machine". Penned by Dave Gahan and Kurt Uenala this song is certainly one of the highlights of the album. The song itself has a medium pace, a wonderful beat and great chorus. Actually, this song was screaming for the "remix" to come along and transform it.
I have to say that this maxi single is both disappointing and satisfying. It is disappointing because two of the mixes seem really mismatched with the integrity of the source material. The Grinderman remix is a hard rock-ish mix that isn't bad but the vocals at time don't seem to match with the music. The Jim Jones mix is very difficult to gage. It sounds like Dave Gahan's vocals are trapped in a Pulp Fiction/1960s surfer tune and it seems like the vocals and music never really seem to match. Notwithstanding, I find it refreshing that both of these mixes tried something different, instead of using a drum machine and repeating the same line or word for seven minutes. There are more Depeche Modes mixes than I care to count that is guilty of this ruse.
The Little Vampire remix and Maps remix are both good too; I favor the latter due to the dreamy soundscape that mirrors the original version. And these versions also use all the original vocals. As for the radio mix, it is a condensed version of the album mix with a few variations that make it different just enough to be unique in its own right.
It would have been awesome if a live version were on this single. Mainly due to the fact that the video for this track is a live performance and the sleeve is taken from a video that is displayed behind the band when they perform "Should Be Higher". I can happily say first hand that I saw DM on tour this past September and "Should Be Higher" was in the set list. It was one of the highlights of the show, again it would have been a welcomed addition to this single.

I like this cd single a lot. First of all, I'm glad a few bands still produce singles. The single-edit is nice, and Nick Zinner's remix is very cool. A nice 1-2 combo of versions of my choice for the best track on Delta Machine.

What Can I say ? I'm a depeche mode. Of all the mixes, 2 of them stand out, the rest -in my opinion- are just clutter.

Great track, but these mixes aren't so hot

Plumped for the remix CD EP, and also the 12" as no overlap, as the Radio Mix by Mark "Spike" Stent is also on this CD. The original album version is incredible, and for me the highlight of the very strong Delta Machine album. As such I wasn't expecting these mixes would better it, but hoped they'd still include some good reinterpretations.
Very mixed bag - I only enjoyed the Little Vampires and MAPS remixes, as both are still very electronic but take the track in different directions (MAPS mix is quite ambient in places). Neither are as strong as the original, but they are both worth having. However for me the 2 'guitar-laden' mixes (tracks 1 and 4) are a bit of a mess, although I'm sure the rockier tinge will appeal more to other fans. The Spike Radio Mix is perhaps the most disappointing, as the mix boosts certain sounds I would've preferred were left lower in the mix, whilst almost removing the bleeps that develop the track nicely through verse 2. Mr Stent often produces the goods, but for some reason this just had me wishing he'd done an edit of the album version, rather than a slight tweak/mix.
Remixes are a very personal taste, but I wish the band/producer/Flood had sat down and given us a proper extended remix of this superb track themselves - it really deserved it! Oh well.....

Hardly any Depeche - for dub mix lovers only

For the excellent "Should Be Higher" track the label have released a 12" of 5 dubs, and one speeded up vocal remix. For all 3 singles from Delta Machine Sony have tended to put the more difficult mixes, or dubs/instrumentals, on the vinyl release. None of these "SBH" versions appear on the far more commercial Cd singles, and aside from aforementioned vocal that is probably just as well. These sparse and often dated sounding dubs need to be heard in isolation of any version that even vaguely resembles the actual song!
If you don't like remixes that do not keep to the original vibe, then avoid this 12" at all costs. I have given it 3 stars as I liked the sparse treatment of track A3, with just enough vocal and intro-key samples to remind you what it is a remix of, and the increased BPM slightly clubby off-kilter remix B2. I'm not listing remixers as they are all pretty much unknowns, so name-dropping isn't necessary!
The pressing quality on my copy is excellent however, but these mixes often only include small samples of the original vocal in a totally unrelated track, so suspect I won't play this release very often. Its a brave release, and will appeal to some dub fans, but will probably send most Depeche fans back to the Returns counter!

Fantastically well produced slab of an authentic dépêche mode single quality tune. Then the straight remixes. Safe, formulaic, genre box ticking blandness. Nothing pioneering, fresh or original. Why speed up a vocal? Children and adult remix packages should be separate just like their TV schedules. Perhaps I am over critical of this release, perhaps it is just the straw that broke the camel’s back and made him explode in a busy market covering everybody in camel hair, guts, tobacco and coconut milk (what, I’m not a vet, who knows what is inside those humps, it is a truly genuine mystery of the east), perhaps I will play this some evening as the power fluctuates and it will be all woozy and interesting, spewing all frequencies and tones unfamiliar and intriguing with clip and thud loops faded and spiralling as vocals blossom bloom and boom sellotape and binoculars on Tuesday whe

Depeche Mode from day one until the mid 90s used to produce the best 12" versions out there
Each a classic you'd play again and again...often the versions used live.
These days the 12"s are mixed beyond recognition of the original song with no thought of quality or the listener.
I wonder if the band themselves even hear these mixes???
The song itself is really good, the album Delta Machine amazing, the 12"s are throughtless and unlistenable

After listening the same song on the album, this version is just bland...why cut it at the end??? Most importantly, why putting another version of the same song as a b-side????
Nope, wrong!
Amazon was brilliant though in following up the once again ab fab customer service & I had my package posted as I requested...I love you guys! ;)
