The Pogues' album "If I Should Fall from Grace with God" is a phenomenal piece of work that effortlessly blends traditional Irish folk music with punk rock elements. Released in 1988, this album showcases the band's raw energy and rebellious spirit. From the opening track "If I Should Fall from Grace with God" to the iconic "Fairytale of New York," each song is a masterpiece in its own right. The lyrics, penned by the legendary Shane MacGowan, are poetic and evocative, capturing both the beauty and grittiness of life. The instrumentation is lively and infectious, with the fiddle, accordion, and tin whistle creating an unmistakably Irish sound. This album perfectly captures the essence of The Pogues' unique musical style and is a must-listen for fans of Irish folk and punk rock alike.

A friend back in San Diego introduced me to the Pogues music about five years ago and this was the album that made me a fan.
Straightaway, a sonic riot comes at you with a relentless energy. You can just picture this scene in a pub: fists and chairs flying, glasses breaking, and pool cues swinging while Shane MacGowan and Company are on stage lustily urging every one on.
My favorites are the manic title cut and the even more maniacal Fiesta. Pour in the bittersweet Fairytale of New York, stir in the strident and pointed anti-British politics of Medley and Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six, then shake in the majesty of The Broad Majestic Shannon and you have yourself one heady brew of a CD. The rest of the songs add the necessary froth.
Since I had worn my cassette out, I am very happy to have found this CD here. I heartily recommend this to anyone who likes quality, high-energy music with an Irish edge.

I love the Pogues!! This album is probably the best for getting all their best songs in one. Came to me undamaged and in normal condition.

I've loved this CD since I bought the original relase around 1990, and decided to pay some more money for the remastered version. Wow, what a job the studio did remastering it! A lot of care seems to have gone into the process, and the sound is almost three dimensional: the clarity of each instrument, the separation, the pounding bass... The highpoint for me on this CD is "Thousands are Sailing," and it's an absolute pleasure to hear it remastered.
If you love the Pogues, but already own the original release of this CD, consider repurchasing the remastered version; you'll be very pleased you did.

buy this album. think about the thousands in hope of the hand of opportunity. and the boys of the n y p d choir . this album is simply great. then check out paddy keenan on pipes and john williams on concertina, and martin hays, seamus egan, paddy killoran, casey in the cowhouse, etc etc. you know look at the trad too. there is a lot to lift a heart up in the ridiculous twisted world. yeah i've fallen from grace and i cant get up. so i dance another loop and share a howl. cheers.

This is a seminal album in Irish music, a bridge between the rare ould times and modern concerns. Writers far superior to me have logged essays about this album and band. Trust them more than you trust me, some Internet rando.

3.und sicherlich stärkstes Album in Vinyl
Reviewed in Germany on May 20, 2023

The pinnacle of The Pogues
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 27, 2006
I've been a Pogues fan for 20 years now, listen to them pretty much every day and have lost count of the number of times I've seen them live. The Pogues do not conform and have a fierce rebellious streak that is tinged with cheeky mischief and outright drunken beligerance. What a refreshing change from the mechanical music product culture of today. This album became an instant classic when it was released in early 1988 and for good reason: the songs are crackers and are the usual blend of traditional songs revived and reinvigorated by thr Booze Brothers, original songs by the one and only Shane MacGowan and a few pearls from the other boys. The poetic lyrics coupled with the magnificent musicianship make it an experience to savour and each listen reveals the subtlety and delicacy of the arrangement. The only donkey on the whole album is Sit Down By The Fire as it seems rushed and Shane can't be bothered to sing it properly but even that has a certain charm. The stand-out songs for me are the joyful Broad Majestic Shannon, the embittered Thousands Are Sailing, the riotously sinister Turkish Song Of The Damned and the immortal Fairytale Of New York.
The remastered version (which I bought to replace the original CD, which I bought to replace the original LP!) featuring a few classic extras, including the magnificent collaborations with the Dubliners for The Irish Rover and Mountain Dew, just make it all the better and confirm this album as the key Pogues album to own. It catches the boys at their productive zenith where they are still creating great music and they haven't begun the decline that clearly showed on Peace & Love. More than anything, it sounds like they are having a ball.
Some sensitive listeners might not like a couple of the songs, especially Bottle Of Smoke, for the high expletive count, but that would be like criticising a great painting because a few of the brush strokes are a bit too heavy. Give yourself a treat and order a copy now.
