(Updated at the bottom)

I recently used these to move a fair amount of furniture out of a second story apartment, and I was extremely pleased with how well these worked. They were fairly simple to figure out how to use, as you just have to throw the harness on and strap on the lifting strap while squatting.

Going down stairs can be a little tricky because one side needs to be higher than the other, but after we figured it out, it was a lot easier than using our hands and arms to lift the items. For some of the items, including couches, our legs and bodies were doing all of the lifting, and you could actually just use one hand to steady the couch. This made going down the stairs a lot more safe, since it left an arm free to hold the handrail.

I have the orange forearm lifts which I had used in the past: Forearm Forklift Lifting and Moving Straps, Orange, Model L74995CN, but those still require that you do the lifting with your arms. This shoulder dolly moves all of that weight off your arms and to your legs and back. (Be very careful when initially lifting, so that you don't injure yourself! - We practiced on a lighter mattress first, to get the hang of it).

I definitely recommend these if you have an upcoming move. I helped a friend move a few weeks ago, and I regretted not having these for that move.
(Note: if you have any hesitations on how well they work, or you want to get visual tips on how to best use these, there are YouTube videos that show people demonstrating their use).

Update 2/17/2014:

Just used these again this weekend for a move, and it is amazing how well this shoulder dolly works! Another person and I were able to lift and carry a huge and very heavy solid wooden bed with built-in drawers. We had moved this bed in the past, and it had always been the most difficult item to move and maneuver with (it had to go on carts, and it would always slip off the carts and bang the walls). This time, we just picked it up and walked with it. I am very happy that I have these straps and I will be hanging on to them for as long as they last!

Better than the Forearm Forklift, we have used these through 10+ moves between my family and friends. Examples of objects moved:

* 300 pound executive monolith desk
* 450 pound safe into basement down narrow steps and small landings
* 8' x 10' reclaimed wood barn door up 2 flights of stairs

Flat moves are easy and we have had non-athletic 100 pound ladies lifting things 250 pound powerlifters struggle with alone. Stairs can be tricky, but we have found the best method up the stairs to be as follows:
* Have the shorter person go first and get as close to the bottom of the stairs as possible with the heels of the individual touching the riser of the first stair
* Have the shorter person adjust the strap so the object is 2 inches off the ground
* Have the taller person (on the bottom) do a deep squat and tighten the strap as much as possible.
* The taller person should slowly rise out of the deep squat while the shorter person ascends the first (and sometimes second and third) stair

I agree with the other reviewers that padding would be nice, but I like that I can feel any subtle shifts in the weight so I know where my balance point is.

I bought this specifically to move a 265 pound Sole Fitness F80 Folding Treadmill in the box (7ft x 3ft x 16in) from our garage, down a hill with a 10 foot vertical drop, and around the back of the house to the basement walk-in. There was no way to get it down the interior stairs and, with four to six inches of snow on the ground, I couldn't move it outside with a cart or dolly. Rather than wait until Spring my grown daughter and I used the Shoulder Dolly to lift it length-wise with the strap under the 16in side and we carried it to the basement. I tend to injure my back a lot while lifting and moving heavy objects. I had no soreness at all after carrying the treadmill (and I had the heavy end).

I do recommend planning exactly how you're going to carry and maneuver large, heavy, or oddly shaped objects in advance. Standing in the snow in 5 degree weather is no time to figure out how you want to go down the hill. Also practice lifting smaller objects to get a feel for using the Shoulder Dolly. You can squat down as low as you want to adjust the strap, but if you go to the floor and pull the strap tight then you'll be lifting the object much higher than if you only squat a little. Heavy objects are more stable if they are closer to the ground (because it keeps your center of mass lower) but you have to have enough clearance for stairs and any obstacles that you may need to step over.

We will definitely use this for moving large/heavy items around the house in the future.

Had to help my brother move and had concerns because hes 5 foot 11 and I am 6 foot 7. He had some insanely heavy furniture and we moved it with such ease. I will ALWAYS use this product when I need to move things. It saved my lower back and turned what would have been an all day moving day to under 2 hours. We moved things so fast it was astronomical. Very happy I bought this!

Friends helped load the moving truck for our out-of-state move, then my husband and I unloaded it ourselves using these straps. I'm certainly not extra strong. The straps worked very well and we couldn't have unloaded the heavier pieces without them...items like a large sofa, long solid-wood dresser, and buffet table. The set was effective, easy to adjust, and easy to use.

I would give this set 5 stars if the harnesses were padded. That would have made moving the heaviest pieces (like that solid-wood dresser) even easier. Still, the sets with the padded harnesses tend to be much more expensive, so this set is a good value. Also, you'll want to be careful to tie up the ends of the straps after adjusting it to the right size for each piece of furniture. It would be easy to forget and have a major tripping hazard at your feet.

TL;DR - Harness makes moving things easy, large enough to fit husky/large guys, only real con is lack of shoulder padding. Goes great with drinking while moving things.

I live in a second floor in-law apartment (above the garage) and recently had the washing machine die. From experience getting appliances/furniture into the apartment is a hassle (it's not that the stairs are narrow... it's that they are there) so I though we'd give these a shot. Delivery was prompt (have to love Prime) and use is super simple: Put harness on with buckle facing your front, thread strap under the middle of the load, cinch strap to the buckle, stand up. We did a test run with the old dryer (very light but large) and found it to be very easy; the hardest part was going down the stairs (the person on the bottom still controls most of the weight however the person at the top is helping take some of it as well as helping to balance) as the bottom person needs to have their strap cinched higher the the top person. We then repeated the process with the washer (the heavy appliance) and found it's more an act of keeping the appliance balanced than anything! We were able to easily move the old appliances downstairs and into the truck as well as move the new stuff in under an hour with no break (okay, we found we could drink beer while moving the driers... sssh). The only real complaint we both had after all was said and done was that the straps need padding over the shoulder. The harness fits extremely well (we're both large guys; developed upper bodies with a few extra pounds so "large" harnesses/shirts/etc never fit) and the buckle/strap combination is extremely easy to use. My only regret is not having bought these things earlier...

I was skeptical of the single strap in the middle. I was concerned that the single strap might not do a good job with balancing but this strap has exceeded my expectation. For those who are on the fence and wondering whether this will help with moving I HIGHLY recommend buying this. Buy it and use it - you'll be thankful you did. Moving large clumsy objects has never been easier ESPECIALLY when moving up/down stairs. Makes refrigerators, ovens, washers so much easier to use. I was literally laughing at how effortless it was the first time I used this to move refrigerator. You will NOT regret this purchase and you will be the most popular person the next time you show up with this to help someone on moving day!!!

This shoulder dolly is a nice concept and I am sure it would work for multiple purposes.

I bought this because I needed to move a piano. It was extremely irritating because I still did not have a lot of physical strength. I did not have trouble putting this together. you slide the middle line into the harness and lock it by the piece of metal holding it down. Think of a baby harness.

I moved this with another guy twice the weight of me. Between the two of us, we made 5 stops to finally get it in.

I used this for the first time helping my cousin move from her apartment to her new house. I thought that as soon as I sold my truck that people would stop asking me to help them move! I didn't plan on them renting a truck. Touché, friends and family. Any whoo, the only other person that shows up to help is some skinny kid with this Shoulder Dolly set. I immediately thought that I was going to be doing most of the work but at least that I'd have someone to talk to since we were both in I.T. For a smart guy, I'm pretty stupid sometimes. This "skinny kid" was the hero of the day with these moving straps. He and I moved a plethora of large furniture. Apparently my cousin thought that being an adult meant buying furniture big enough for the cast of WWE Raw. We were able to navigate around tights corners, down flights of stairs and right onto the truck using our hands only to stabilize the items that we were moving. I, on the other hand, brought a set of those "forearm moving straps" #frownyface.

I recently saw these sold by Amazon Warehouse Deals so picked up a pair. I recently helped another friend move and I was relishing the call. We moved the stuff from the entire second floor to his basement since they are planning to remodel. If I didn't have these I would have been pretty sore the next day.

I can hear you right now saying "But these are just nylon straps. Why almost $40?!?" For starters, the construction is rock solid. The buckles are strong. Did you see the reviewer picture showing them lifting a dumpster with these? That's why these are $40. The next time someone asks you to move, tell them you'll do it if they buy you these. Say you'll loan it to them if they ever need them. Whatever. You will be thankful you have these.

I was skeptical at best, especially after seeing it or a similar product on an infomercial on TV. But the prior reviews here were good and...

I needed to move a 575lb Viking Range from a detached garage, across the driveway, up on stair and maneuver it around an island to it's final resting spot in our new kitchen.

I planned to use an air sled - reserved one to rent at the local equipment rental place.

WAS AWESOME!!!

I'm no body builder, stronger than average, but it was enough. 2 guys strapped up the Range and successfully moved it - all 575lbs of it.

Who woulda thunk???

Woulda paid twice for it if I knew beforehand it was going to work that well.... getting it delivered same day was just a bonus.

Recommend it with full stars.
