Amazon.com Review

Dog shows are phenomenally popular, immensely competitive, and often perplexing for beginners. Show Me offers easy-to-follow tips and words of wisdom for those new to this challenging sport. Author D. Caroline Coile is quick to point out that the average pet pooch (although lovely in your eyes) will not make it in professional competitions. Most show dogs are bred for this very purpose, and the book includes practical advice for selecting and raising your top dog. (Can you really handle that Great Dane?)

Coile divulges her immense knowledge of competition culture, from grooming tips and obedience training to the psychology of dealing with competition loss. Crisp color photographs and expertly drawn pencil sketches of that perfect show dog will capture the imagination of any would-be competitor.

I just got this book and I'm already half way through I love it so much! I'm not by any means "clueless" in the world of dog shows, just new. While I know the basics from some mentors - like points and how they work - I often felt my questions beyond that were "stupid" or "silly". In Show Me!, it answered all these questions I'd been too afraid to ask. The author obviously understands us beginners don't want to ask experts these "you should know" questions so she lays everything out in clear detail so you completely get the concepts.

The pictures were beyond helpful as well. It isn't some "picture book" that throws in pictures to make the reading easy. The pictures are actually extremely helpful and highlight what the author is discussing. It really gives you the "Ohh!" factor.

Sure, the reading is pretty basic, but it covers a whole bunch. I would definitely recommend this to someone starting out. There aren't any "secrets" hidden in here so don't expect this to be some holy bible. It really is just a "dog showing guide" for us starting out. If you want to learn more about dog shows, thinking of participating, or are serious but feel dumb asking your "top" friends all these little questions like myself, get it! It's worth the money.

I would also like to mention, I understand asking questions is alright and that's why I have my mentors. I'm just slow to learn when I hear people say things so often times when I ask, even the basic of answers have to turn into elaborate explanations for me to grasp it. If I read the answer, though, paired with a visual, it instantly clicks. I usually don't ask to save myself the frustration and to save them the time!

This is a great book for beginners like me. I've never shown a dog before and Show Me! really gives me most of the information I needed to compare with my expectations of showing. Coile writes very matter-of-fact, honest and plain- not a lot of 'insider' terms that the novice won't understand. Lots of pictures to illustrate posting dogs and proper physical attributes. I do wish she'd detail more what type of interaction/resources the novice might use in getting started (such as local kennel clubs, classes etc). Wonderful resource and left me wanting more- I hope she updates this book with even more helpful, detailed tid-bits!

I absolutely love this book. I was really confused on how dog shows worked until this book. It goes into great detail all areas of stacking, gaiting and showing. Shows you how to dress and what to expect at a show as well as what is expected from you. Explains how to hire a handler and how to handle yourself. It also has very nice comparable pictures and illustrations to help you attain "show eye". This book is by far the most through and easy to understand. I rate this a "must have" for anyone getting into the world of professional dog showing. Keep it for reference!

GREAT book, easy to use, but missing some pretty key information that others included.
If you have a choice of getting this one or "The Absolute Beginner's Guide to Showing Your Dog"..........
DEFINITELY go with the other!!

This is an excellent primer for the novice dog exhibitor. If you want to get involved in showing dogs, I recommend you start with this book. It is written so both the younger handler and adult will find it useful. The basics are well covered, and there is additional information on how to solve some of the problems that may occur in the show ring. Overall, it is an excellent resource and I highly recommend it.

Ms. Coile does a wonderful job of explaining all the important elements in showing a dog. It isn't the first book I've read on the subject but it is the best. It is clear and comprehensive and provides wonderful illustrations--finally, a visual of the various patterns (down & back, the L, the triange!) and an explanation of "pacing" versus "trotting." A wealth of information at small cost! Our bouvier is on his way...
