From the Back Cover
The veteran political journalist and New York Times bestselling author goes behind the scenes at the White House to recount the dramatic tale of a pivotal period in the Obama presidency, from the game-changing 2010 midterm elections to the beginning of the critical 2012 campaign season—a tumultuous time that tested the president as never before and set the stage for a titanic clash over the future of the nation
After Barack Obama's first two years as president—during which he navigated the United States through its severest economic crisis since the Great Depression while managing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq—he was faced with a bitterly divided nation and an emboldened political opposition dedicated to impeding his presidency. What followed was a year of political crises and fierce battles that would transform Obama and profoundly shape the terrain for the next election.
In Showdown, astute political journalist David Corn chronicles and examines this crucial time in the Obama presidency and its impact on the nation's future. Drawing on interviews with White House officials, Obama's inner circle, members of Congress, and others, Corn takes the reader into the Oval Office and the back rooms on Capitol Hill for a fast-paced and gripping account of the major events as they unfolded: the controversial tax-cut deal with Congress in December 2010; the repeal of Don't Ask/Don't Tell; the passage of the New START treaty; the near shutdown of the government in early 2011; the revolutionary Arab spring; the killing of Osama bin Laden; the intense, high-wire debt-ceiling negotiations (in which intransigent House Republicans risked the nation's financial standing); House Speaker John Boehner's erratic maneuvers during the rise and fall of the grand bargain; and the face-off between Obama and congressional Republicans over how best to create jobs.
Corn captures the dilemmas faced by a president assailed by disappointed progressives and defiantly obstructionist Republicans determined to see his defeat. Here is a chief executive trying to balance the cross-cutting demands of governance and politics while handling unending challenges at home and abroad. The book reveals a thoughtful leader with a cool head who is unafraid to take risks and make tough choices, a steely battler who successfully turned his enemies' obstinacy to his advantage. Obama has often frustrated supporters, but Corn shows how the president, who often puts pragmatism ahead of partisan demands, has craftily operated within a hostile conservative political climate, looking to win the long game, achieve progressive goals, and, ultimately, win reelection.
A vivid and powerful account of White House decision-making, Showdown offers a unique and enlightening look at the turbulent American political scene during one of the most consequential moments of the nation's history, and explains the fascinating and complicated leader at the heart of this vortex.

"Showdown" spends most of its pages bringing you inside the still-fresh political battles of 2011, while providing a factual background of Obama's first two years in office. Mr. Corn doesn't sugarcoat it - Obama suffered many missteps and setbacks in his first two years. Corn has diligently collected facts, evidence and information from sources inside the White House that help us understand how Obama seems to have recovered his footing in the presidency in 2011. Corn has promoted this book as a discovery into "How Obama got his groove back." With stories such as the Egyptian uprising, the killings of Bin Laden and Qaddafi recounted, it seems so. I think that readers will find that they can actively form their own opinions about Obama's current level of "grooviness" and can look forward to the 2012 elections with a better understanding about how Obama ticks and how his team plans on winning re-election. Most specifically, the book shares Obama's firm resolve to focus on jobs in 2012 - and we have seen many jobs bills passed in recent months. So far, Obama is staying true to his adamance of 2011.
If you are a fan of all things political - then you will enjoy this book. You will relive the dramatic moments of the Obama presidency as if you are right there in the room. My heart was literally pounding and I was filled with such anxiety as I rehashed the debt ceiling battle with Biden, Boehner, Cantor, Reid, Pelosi, McConnell, et al - and I already knew the outcome! That is a testament to the creatively flowing pen of David Corn - who manages to make the reader feel that the events are happening again in realtime. Of course, with anything historical or political we typically do know the outcome so do not let that ruin this ride (eh, read) for you. The gamesmanship (game-playing? outright backstabbing?) between Boehner and Cantor is priceless entertainment. The secret negotiations between Boehner and Obama and the tidbits leaked to news outlets is equally dramatic and dare I say, rather exciting. Hey, if you are a political junkie, you are going to love this stuff! In fact, I'd say this book was written for you.
Something that particularly impresses me is the level of participation and highly significant role that Vice-President Biden plays in the Administration. Biden is a major player! I did not know that and would not have known that but for reading "Showdown." If you are of the mind that perhaps, Hillary Clinton should run as Obama's VP in 2012, you won't think that anymore. Nothing against Hillary - I hope she runs for President in 2016 - but Biden is a strength for Obama. He is an integral part of the Obama presidency. Joe Biden is a shrewd and tough customer - I don't think there are many people that could outfox him, or would even dare try.
What I found most compelling about "Showdown" was that it did not only give me a clearer picture of Barack Obama, but it gave me much insight into many other key government figures (mentioned above), so that when I see the dynamic between these people play out today I can see where they're coming from and guess where they are going. Not only does "Showdown" allow you to be a fly on the wall for past events, it gives you the means to be a fly on the wall during present and future "showdowns." Once you are graced with this insider's perspective into Washington's current key players you will hunger for each new political detail and then analyze like never before. What I took away from this book is a very strong capacity to understand more clearly the dynamic between the personalities presented and how they come together to form whatever the end game in a particular situation may be.
Oh, and I do want to see the Obama vs. Boehner "Showdown" movie!
Okay, to the book itself. "Showdown" recounts the legislative aspects of calendar year 2011 (roughly), in which Obama had to deal with the "shellacking" his party received in the 2010 midterm elections and the Tea Party-ized congress. There is plenty of true substance here, not just details for the sake of reporting. Occasionally there's too much. In fact, it's amazing how deep into the weeds David Corn was able to get. We learn about the Gang of Six, the Big Cross, and the unenviable position of John Boehner (really, I almost felt sorry for the guy after reading this book...almost). We also learn about just how long a game was being played by Messina, Plouffe, Axelrod, and, of course, Obama.
This book stops at the start of 2012, so there is little about the election. But many of the themes of both parties' campaigns were clearly at play during 2011, hence the subtitle of the book: "How Obama Battled the GOP to Set up the 2012 Election." I was tempted to deduct a star for length and depth of detail; this book occasionally read like a great 300-page book crammed into 400 pages, as the saying goes (I read it on my Kindle so I don't have the actual page count).
As you can probably tell from the reviews, the book is definitely pro-Obama. But there is plenty of criticism, too, and I did not feel like Corn was spinning or propagandizing. Corn gives us analysis, not a recitation of talking points. I thought "Showdown" was worth far more than the $2.99 it costs to buy for the Kindle.

David Corn has written a book which offers a relatively impartial account of Obama's time in office from early 2010 to the end of 2011. It covers, in detail, the aftermath of the Mid-term elections, Obama's at first cautious handling of the Arab Spring, the raid on bin Laden's compound, the debt ceiling crisis and Obama's campaign to get Congress to pass the American Jobs Act.
Although Corn does appear to be an Obama supporter he quotes Obama aides and critics. The critics are often Democrat politicians including Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid - people you would expect to support Obama no matter what. Corn's writing style allows readers to debate the president's actions and draw their own conclusions.
When I finished reading this book, I felt I had been well-informed rather than lectured. Essentially reading for the politically aware.
