Review

Rae brings to light difficult subject matter with empathy and restraint, gracefully exploring the pain of overcoming violation and trauma through the eyes of the victims. Rae's characters are realistic and endearing. This is an uplifting story about the courage it takes to reform a community and care for the marginalized and neglected.

...this book really blew me away! So many nice little Christian novels out there, but so few that really attempt to be life-changing....It makes such a difference!... I was so taken away with the story. All the emotion, the drama, the romance and tenderness, the action, adventure. I couldn't wait to see what happened but I didn't want it to end either. I really can't say enough good things about it and how much I enjoyed it. WOW!... I was nervous with anticipation and crying and so caught up in it all. I had to put the book down to give myself an emotional break. :) ... I rarely cry over books, but I think that other than Karen Kingsbury, [Rae is] the only other author that has made me cry while reading a book. -Sue

I love it!!!...[Rae's] best book yet I think! Can't put it down. -Mary

I couldn't put the book down... a compelling story of suspense and romance. -Jeanie

...incredible. -Michael

I think this is [Rae's] best book yet. It is so relative to today's church and how we treat people. It is a wonderful mix of relationships, interwoven with suspense and love. It is amust read for anyone who thinks their past defines them and gives them nohope, whether they are a victim of human trafficking, child abuse, or just bad decision making, because Jesus can wipe the slate clean. -Wanda

This is an intense book!  Very well written, great character development....I don't know someone that couldn't identify with one or more characters in it, the heart, the heartbreak, the discomfort with someone they don't know/understand, the living in fear. I LOVE Candy's character....She is so raw and real....I literally cried. I cannot say enough about this book. I literally couldn't put it down. It was SO GOOD. -Amy

Shredded was compelling, convicting, and compassionate at once...a deeply disturbing reality packaged with grace, humor, and a sweet love story. I couldn't put it down. -Joy

...hands down my favorite author. -Tiffany

Warning!! You won't want to put it down once you get started!! ...there's no stopping. Awesome, awesome book!!!!  -Sue

Brookside Baptist Church, in Oakview, N.C., is bound by years of tradition and a powerful deacon. But when Pastor Stewart and his wife arrive in town, changes begin to take hold at the dusty church. Candy, a local prostitute, attends Pastor Stewart's first sermon and her life is transformed. To some of the elderly ladies' dismay, the ebullient town outcast begins to engage wholeheartedly with the church while learning to reform her life--providing an example of the redemptive power of Christ's love to even the most devout members. Candy's bubbly spirit brightens the church, inspiring the lonely Jean, a longtime church member, to come to engage with painful memories. For 15 years Jean has been holding a troubling secret about the church's deacon. In light of her knowledge, over the years Jean has made it her duty to guard the church children. Now, with the community slowly changing, "Blue Jean" is able to let down her defenses and find unexpected comfort with the pastor's handsome brother, Grant, who helps her heal at last.

From the Author

What inspired you to write Shredded?
SHREDDED is a contemporary take on the scandalous woman's visit to Jesus, where she wipes His feet with her hair, sparking judgment from the religious, but forgiveness from Christ. One day in church, as the pastor was preaching through that scene in Scripture, I envisioned a modern scene where a "sinner" comes to Jesus in a rather scandalous way, and wondered how the people within that setting would react. Which ones would act like the angry, disgusted religious leader, which ones would act like Jesus, and could there perhaps be a hidden person within the story who, like the scandalous woman, would find freedom in Jesus' declaration, "Go in peace"? In SHREDDED, the focus is on that hidden person, Jean, who watches a woman with a sinful past transform, and in the end, is transformed herself.
Any reader can find someone in SHREDDED with whom they can relate, grow along with, and cheer for as the book and its characters move toward the climax.
Your Stolen Series is about fighting human trafficking. Do you feel the topics are similar?
Definitely. There is a huge overlap between exploited adult victims and victims of childhood sexual abuse. If we can help people overcome childhood exploitation, we not only help people live better lives, but we take away much of that vulnerability to further exploitation.
Why tackle this heavy topic in a novel?
Over ten years ago, I read the novel Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. When a friend, who had a painful past, told me, "This book changed the way I see God," I knew that was the kind of books I wanted to write. Not just exciting, romantic stories, but ones that made a difference.
In my travels and as I speak, I meet so many women who were victims in the past. Statistics say that 1 in every 6 women have some kind of sexual abuse in their past. We can't assume the women in our churches and social circles aren't carrying dark secrets of hurt, secrets they may have never shared with anyone. I wanted to give the message that they are not alone, and that they can walk into the light, and be free.
Is it just for women with past hurts?
Shredded is about freedom of all kinds. For Candy, it's freedom from her past lifestyle of sin. For Brenda, it's freedom from the fear of what others think. For Jean, it's freedom to love and be loved. Every character in the book has to choose whether to be free, or remain enslaved to something.
Besides, it's an exciting story that I think Christian women in general will enjoy. At least I hope so!
