I saw the exhibit at the Sackler Gallery in Washington DC, and did not purchase this companion book there, as I did not wish to carry it around for the remainder of the day! The price of the book is so reasonable, considering the quality of the photographic reproductions, and the superb paper and binding. I was thrilled to be able to purchase it from Amazon when I got back home.

I came across this art book in my local independent bookstore and was "blown away." It is a secret collection made by a New Yorker in her Manhattan apartment and put together as a shrine. These are 13th to 19th century Buddhist masterpieces - most in bronze sculpture - that were smuggled out of Tibet and then had to be sold by the noble families for survival - but only on the condition that the relics retain their religious use. Ms. Kandell honored that wish. After decades, she let her unique, private collection be viewed - but only as a shrine - as it was intended to be experienced.

These are pristine art sculptures of the many deities in Buddhist practice. I cannot think of any serious student of Buddhism who would not be "moved spiritually" by the devotion of Ms. Kandell to house and strictly maintain the collection of magnificent pieces as a shrine.

Art can touch the soul. This art book is among the few volumes that can do...just that.

Marilyn Rhie and Robert Thurman have provided an exciting book which oganizes Tibetan History and the Tibetan bronze statues through identification of historical period and stylistic development. The examples of bronzes that have been selected and the explanation of the Boddhisatva's, Buddhas and Historical Rinpoche not only gives the reader an education through the wonderful descriptions, but also through looking at the superb photography of John Bigelow Taylor. This is definitely a great book for connoiseurs who want to study the evolution of the sculpture via geographical differences.

The Alice Kandell Collection is certainly a wondeful bronze collection of unusual and rare examples of Tibetan Sculpture. It certainly provides the peace and tranquility we would all like to attain through the experiences she must have felt in selecting and collecting each individual piece. This is definitely a book that I would recommend for anyone interested in Tibetan culture.

You don't have to be Buddhist or any denomination to enjoy this book. The art is sublime. The writing: flawless. Each piece is explained to perfection. If you don't get emotional after reading is go to the doctor as you are bloodless.
