What I loved most about Rian Field is that it teaches the reader about an increasingly prevalent disorder called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Mayo Clinic defines it this way:
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is triggered by a terrifying event — either experiencing it or witnessing it. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
The main character, Rian Field, suffers with this illness from a previous event in her life. Throughout the story, the reader gets to tag along inside her thoughts. The narrative is done in such a way to allow the reader to endure the mayhem inside of Rian's head. The thinking and repetitive circling of paranoia, night terrors, physical symptoms and unrelenting emotional trauma from this disorder are communicated in an informative manner without feeling the sensation of reading a text book. In addition, there is enough intrigue to keep the reader guessing and confused as to where the action will go next and from whom it will be initiated.
The author has a skillful ability to bring a compassionate look at this dreadful phenomenon.
Throughout the work the main character undergoes some therapy for PTSD which sheds light on some of the techniques for treating the illness. In addition to the emotional treatment with counseling sessions and the physical attention to a medical model for stabilization, Wagner touches on the spiritual realm as well. The hidden treasure found unobtrusively towards the middle of this book is the prevailing message that prayer has the ultimate power to break chains of fear, confusion, guilt, mistrust and deceit. Don't miss out on that nugget of truth!
Anytime a book is able to entertain, inform, keep the reader engaged and give hope, it gets a stamp of approval from me. If you have a special interest in PTSD or you love to devour a good suspense novel, you will definitely enjoy this work. My only recommendation is that you do not read this one at the beach!!
Some of the circumstances for the story were pretty far fetched with shark attacks being related to direct attacks on Rian's life, but the twists were well thought out and I was not able to guess ahead of time what was going on.
My only real issue was that it was fairly slow paced for the type of story, and I had a hard time connecting with Rian, the MC. However, the action was well-written and fast paced. There were so many secondary characters (friends and co-workers) that I had a hard time keeping up, and frequently had to go back in the story to refresh my memory of who different people were or to figure out what time we were in. There were frequent flash backs.
I think that this story would be well received from anyone who enjoys a good suspense. The plot twist was surprising, which is something I can usually figure out before it is revealed in the story.
This review was done in conjunction with Nerd Girl Official. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Rian feild surived a horrific experince were she was almost killed and lost her unborn child. That experince really flung her life into a spin she started suffering from PSTD. It took 2 years for her to pull her life almost together and start her career a a marine biologist. Then with one horrible shark attack all the pain and her PSTD symptoms came flooding back. she had a gut feeling the two situations were connected she just didnt know how and who to trust in her life to help her figure it out.
I really liked how this book had me guessing to the end...all the twist turns and drama had me holding my breath and biting my nails. I really wanted rian to find peace and most of all find herself and her strength to battle through all and end up victorious.
This novel follows the life of the main character, Rian Field, and her loved ones. A traumatic event that almost costs Rian her life brings back strong memories of a previous attack that happened a few years before. As a result of both incidents, Rian struggles with anxiety issues and is unsure of who she should trust in her once tight-knit circle. Rian has a premonition that someone close to her is responsible for the attempts on her life, and that they are soon going to attack again.
From the get-go, I was really impressed by the author's vivid and well-rounded descriptions of the main character, as well as her husband, Jack. There is also a lot of description about the beach town in which they live, which helped me to paint a picture in my head. I could also tell that the author did a great deal of research into the topics in the novel, including the facts about marine life and the types of therapy that are suggested to Rian after her attacks.
One thing that I struggled with was following the time line at the beginning of the book. There are quite a few flashbacks, and sometimes the plot seemed a little erratic. There were moments when I had to stop and read back before I could put together what point in time was being discussed. This improved as I got further into the book, though. I also sometimes struggled with the supporting characters, Rian's friends and co-workers. These were the people who Rian suspected of orchestrating the attacks against her, but I had a hard time telling them apart.
All in all, I would recommend this book for readers who are looking for a good suspense read. All of the suspects being members of Rian's circle of friends kept the suspect pool quite small, but I didn't have the end figured out, and was surprised by the plot twist. The premise is interesting, and I loved the unique aspect of the shark attacks. It's not like anything I have read before.
