This time the end caught me a bit off guard, because the novel's structure is quite different from the usual: the two parallel storylines have quite separate climaxes and the novel is only partially about what we think it is at the start. I was left with a "wait, so this is how it ends? What about all the rest that's happening?" impression, which gives the end a bit of an odd feeling but also makes the wait for Hidden4 all the more exciting. I have to say, I didn't find the start of the whole golem idea entirely convincing, and the series as a whole seems to suffer a bit from underdeveloped antagonists, a likely aftereffect of how tight the story's focus is around Kim's life and family.
However, Shrouded Soul does a great job of exploring the more magical side of this universe while still keeping the focus on its compelling, well rounded characters and the challenges they face, both magical and personal. I particularly appreciated how the story finally brought Kim to face the consequences of her "keeping secrets and pushing everyone away" dubious strategy, instead of handwaving them away, and how Phailin's subplot was handled: she isn't sacrificed to act as AJ's motivation, but she faces her fate on her own terms and keeping her agency, simply accepting the terrible risks she's taking to help her son and doing everything she can. In the end, she is the reason why the main plotline is resolved in the first place, even before Kim and AJ.
However, in the end, what about Urahland and Saul's foul plans, and Kim's and AJ's future? Well, I know I can't wait for Hidden 4 to come out, that's for sure! :)
Book three in Clare Davidson's Hidden series grabs you by the heart and takes off running. It is awesome, intense, and it had my tearing up a quite a bit.
Kim is such a kick butt character. Not that she is going around kicking butt. I'm talking about her will. She is STRONG, stubborn, and, if it comes to it, she will die fighting for her loved ones. It's her greatest strength, but also her greatest weakest.
Her decision to keep everything a secret from her best friend, Sophie, and her family is taking its toll, and all the lies are catching up to her. Her keeping secrets (and everybody else for that matter) is what triggers the events to start snowballing.
I was hooked from the start, and the tension just kept ratcheting, and me guessing. I was at a loss how they would pull through and resolve this massive mess our favorite characters have found themselves in, and the book delivers. Although, the ending isn't as wrapped up as the first two books. This one definitely has a to-be-continued, leaving me with lots of questions. What's going to happen next??? So it's good to know that the author is already at work on book four. Eek!
On a side note: There is some profanity, but not overdone.
Highly recommended. But you will want to read the other two books first, Reaper's Rhythm and Broken Bargain.
*I received an advanced reader copy to read and review.
The story follows the relationship between Kim and AJ and delves further into the mystery of the Baneem and the Shamari.
The magic system is very clever. I particularly like the way that magic has a smell all its own. Davidson writes for her audience but doesn't condescend. She doesn't patronise. Instead she challenges her reader as the plot twists and turns and then takes you to places you never expected. Just when you think you have it all figured out Davidson takes you to a place you'd never even considered.
