The Visual Method for the Practical Identification and Recognition of Shrubs (and vines and ground covers) -- and an important supplement to existing botanical methods.

The book is in two parts: Pictorial Keys and Master Pages. The Keys are designed for easy visual comparison of details which look alike, narrowing the identification of a shrub to one of a small group -- the family or genus.

Then, in the Master Pages, the species of the shrub is determined, with similar details placed together to highlight differences within the family group, thus eliminating all other possibilities. The details of laurel blossoms on this plate are an example and are followed in the book by details of laurel fruit, leaves, and bark.

All of the 3,550 photographs were made specifically for use in this book and were taken either in the field or of fresh material carefully selected from the more than 20,000 specimens collected. Wherever possible, details such as leaves, fruit, twigs, etc., appear in actual size; otherwise, similar details are reproduced in the same scale.

This is a replacement favorite, I find this a great reference book to the Shrubs, vines.....in North America. This book was a bit yellowed in page color but in great shape for a used book edition! This book was recommended to me by several participants on a Nature Conservancy field trip and it is as good as they said it was. It has close-up, black and white photos of the bark, buds, leaves, flowers and fruit of the shrubs and woody vines likely to be encountered growing wild in the Eastern half of the country, including naturalized exotics. We found an unknown shrub growing in Ives Road Fen Preserve, used this book to identify it as Jetbead, and then eradicated it. With more than 3500 photographs, this book gives you the best possible chance for identifying any bush you find growing wild.

I work in environmental science and this book has been invaluable to me. This book allows you to identify any part of the plant based on leaf structure, bark, flowers or fruit, twig structure. This is especially handy when identifying tree/shrub species in the fall and winter, since the leaf is not necessary to use the key in this book.

This publication is good within the scope of the limitations that such a complex world of creation places upon it. There are many plants that have very similar physical characteristics such as leaf shape so unless you have several identifiable parts of the plant in question you are not going to get a positive identification. You need a mature plant specimen also since many plants do not exhibit the identifying traits used in this manual when young or unless they are flowering or have produced fruit. It does use simple drawings and black & white photos to help guide you into a general area of comparison to investigate farther but without all the pieces to the puzzle you are going to hit a dead end that leaves you with a "maybe" at best.

I am a visual learner so this shrub key really worked for me. I appreciated being able to identify shrubs based on the twigs, buds, thorns etc. The one downside is the size of the book - it is very large, and not one I particularly want to carry with me while hiking.
