This knife is advertised as "Limited Edition" of 300, but I have doubts about how limited it really is. There was a limited run in 2013 and there was another run in early 2014, so perhaps Shun is referring to limiting it to only 300 knives per run, but with possible additional runs in the future.

Anyway, I absolutely love this gorgeous knife. There are some knife snobs who look down on this knife because it's a Shun, calling it a "soul-less" knife made by a large factory, or any of such garbage descriptions. That's all baloney. It's a handmade knife crafted by some highly skilled people at Shun. It has plenty of soul to it.

The knife weighs about 9.8 ounces, i.e. about the same weight as a comparably sized German knife. It has a tall blade, which I prefer, but it doesn't fit in some normal sized knife block slots. The blade is very thin and glides through hard veggies easily.

Typical of Shun gyutos, the belly on this knife has a slight curve, which gives it decent rocking ability if that's your style of cutting. The curve is nowhere near as pronounced as on German knives, but definitely slightly more than on most gyutos. It suits me just fine.

The fit and finish are totally flawless.

The blade is GORGEOUS to the max. I do worry, how future sharpening will affect the appearance of the blade.

Whereas most damascus blades with a heavy acid etch have a lot of resistance when cutting through hard veggies, this knife is smooth because the damascus pattern is highly polished and offers no friction.

The handle is very comfortable and gives the knife great balance.

I haven't used it long enough to have to sharpen it and so can't comment on edge holding quality of the steel or ease of sharpening.

To anyone but knife snobs, this is an excellent knife nonpareil.

Is it worth $500? To me it is, unquestionably.
