SHURE M97XE CART
From the Manufacturer
The M97xE is a superb smooth-sounding phonograph cartridge designed to provide long hours of undistorted listening, without fatiguing the ear. Its highly precise tracking ability and flat frequency response are made possible by Shure's unique Type II low-mass thin-wall aluminum alloy stylus cantilever, combined with a precision-crafted, finely polished, elliptical diamond tip.
This cartridge is able to accurately reproduce very difficult musical passages, particularly in the high-frequency range, where audio modulations are the smallest and most concentrated, and stylus tip movement is consequently the most rapid.
- Stylus Mass: Very Low
- Diamond Stylus Tip: Elliptical
- Sound Accuracy: Very High
- Record Wear: Very Low
- Key Features: Dynamic Stabilizer Brush
The Shure exclusive viscous-damped Dynamic Stabilizer maintains a uniform distance between the cartridge and the record under difficult playing conditions, even those caused by warped records or mismatched tonearm mass. When such stabilization is not required, the stabilizer brush can be locked up into its detent position, which, under ideal playing conditions, can provide even better sound quality.
Side-Guard Stylus Protection System
The innovative protection system helps to limit stylus damage if the cartridge accidentally slides across a record. This unique feature responds to side thrusts on the stylus by momentarily forcing the stylus cantilever and tip upward so that the cantilever does not bend sideways.
Die Cast Aluminum Mounting Block
Ensures secure, vibration-free attachment to the tonearm.
Headshell screwdriver, Stylus cleaning brush, Mounting hardware, Stylus guard.

Top customer reviews
I was concerned that it would not be as good as what I was replacing as I spent more than twice the price 30 years ago. Playing the same recordings as I did with the old one they sounded much better with better highs. It makes listening to my old Vinyl a lot more fun than it was.
So I wonder if my old cartridge sounded this good 30 years ago, no way to know.
I would recommend this to anyone that wants to update without spending a lot of money. It sounds better than I imagined it would.
People seem to compare it with more expensive carts and are not fully satisfied. I could not find "New" and available cart out there at $74 (current price) price point that has as many positive opinions about it. (please don't mention your Ebay finds...- a lucky shot) If you know of any please let me know- i will be happy to try them! Cart is easy to install ( Pioneer s-arm) . I was able to be within point " a" and " b" and true on the included protractor on the first trial. If you do install it the first time - try to get a copy of your respective turntable user manual- it does have simple instructions like recommended distance from the tip of the needle to the end of the headshell. If you do not have a copy - it could be found at vinylengine.com- for the most of turntables
About the difference of it and AudioTechnica cartridge that i also own: in my system AT cart is bright to unbearable bright vs. more balanced Shure. In the end it all comes down to individual preference. Enjoy!
Only to discover the stylus off my Stanton 881s was broken.
I found out that it is nearly impossible to find a NOS replacement stylus without paying through the nose.
Available replacement styli ranged from $80 to $180, not willing to pay that for getting back into vinyl.
I have had Shure cartridges in the past and was very satisfied with them so I thought I would give this cartridge a try.
This is my first cartridge purchase in over 20 years. I purchased it based on other customer reviews.
After initial break-in, I thought the cartridge has a very smooth sound with somewhat attenuated treble.
I adjusted my preamps capacitive loading but the high end was still a little subdued.
After making several adjustments to the overhang, tracking force and tracking angle, I still get some inter grove distortion.
I have ~ 60 hours on the cartridge an it is a little to tame, nothing to write home about.
As I recall, my old Stanton 881s never had this issue.
My children bought me an Ortofon 2m red for Christmas, and there is a significant "presence" that is revealed with the Ortofon.
While the Shure apparently is loved by many, I wasn't very impressed.
However, regarding it's neutrality: It is flat, more or less, but tilted. The frequency response of this cartridge slopes gently (and quite linearly) such that the bass-end is somewhat higher than the treble, with a nudge where the cymbals live. (tilted like a couple of kids balanced on a teeter-totter, neither touching the ground). This makes for its super-smooth sound and great bass response. With a touch of EQ, it's downright silky. But on first listen, and until you've broken it in with a few records, it may sound a bit dull, especially if you're used to really strident carts. Like many other reviewers, I wondered if something was wrong with the cartridge, or my sonic tastes. I found that a compensating slope on my EQ (or turning the treble up slightly) restores the detail that's already right there, waiting to be heard.
Once the M97xE loosens up you'll have a hard time going back to carts that unnaturally accentuate high frequencies. Not much frying bacon here, just everything in its right place.
